A Second Assistant Teacher to be Elected Owing to largely increased attendance of pupils at Palmetto Institute, the Trustees will meet this evening for the purpose of electing a second assistant teacher, to take charge of third, fourth and fifth grades. This audition to teaching force will enable the teachers to do much mere thorough work and will no doubt give general satisfaction to the patrons. Program of Excises. The member of Wigntinan Epworth League have arraDge a delightful and instructive program for Tuesday evening, November 2G. to which the public is most cordially invited to be present. The following is the progiam: 1. Song. 2. Devotional exercises. 3. Lecture?Prof. Sidney J. Derrick. 4. Recitation. 5. Recitation. The qxercises will be intersperse d with music. The'League hopes to make these exercises both entertaining and in structive. The Slate Fair. The State Fair held in Columbia last week was a success in every particular and the future of the Association is thus practically settled. While the exhibits were not as numerous as those of previous years, yet they were of superior quality and just enough to make them interesting to visitors. The attendance w is very gratifying to the management. We are indeed proud of the conspicuous place Lexington county took in the Fair, both in exhibits and attendance. Lexington* took the blue ribbon on nearly every thing, flio list hpinrr so Inro-ethafc we have I " ? - O co room for it in this issue, and will have to postpone its publication until next week. The Brookland Brass Band furnished excellent music during the Fair, and was the subject of many favorable comments. On the whole it was one of the most eniovable and successful Fairs * ever held in Columbia. Everybody j enjoyed themselves immensely and j tried to make everybody else share | their enjoyment with them. Secretary Holloway deserves the thanks of the entire State for the successful manner in which he brought off this ? I Fair. Rumors having been circulated that Mr. Buff's petrified man was a fake, that gentleman has made many fa remonstrate that it was not. Reputable physicians of Columbia and other places have examined the body and are unanimous in their opinion that it is really the petrified body of a man. A hole in the leg showed that there.were bones in it, and an incission was made iu the mouth Monday aud two teeth were found. The body is now being bleached as it is exposed to the air. Mr. Buff has had several large offers for the body, but as yet he is undecided what disposition he will -make of it. Iu the meantime it is on exhibition in Columbia and will probably be taken to Atlanta. The Thornwsll Orphanage. This Institution is a family school for orphan children, who are left in poverty by the death of their parents It is located in Clinton, South Carolina, in the upper or predmcne section of the State. The healthfulness of the same is shown by the fact that in twenty years, there have been only three deaths among the orphans. The children are received from any spot.inn nf the Union and from ^n.y denomination. There were 130 orphans under its care last year from twelve different States and ten denominations. It is' however, under Presbyterian control. Orphans are not legally surrendered to the Institution, but are ad mitted to be educated, and sent out prepared to take care of themselves. They are, therefore, taught to use both head and hand, the industrial course being full and thorough and the school work, beiDg equally satisfactory. The support of this Institution is wholly voluntary. It is almost without endownment, depending upon the good will of the people for its maintainance. Gifts of provisions, clothing and money, in response to notices like this constitute its source of income. During the past year, the family was maintained and all salaries paid. And that has been its wonderful experience for twenty years. Thanksgiving and Christmas days are here. Surely this is a good time t) remember the orphans. Gifts should be sent to Rev. AYm. P.
