Permit me to call your attention to the fact, that the convention for the nomination of delegates to the constitutional convention is called for the 27th day of Juiy and the meeting of the clubs to elect delegates to the county convention is called for the 20th day of July. Under the rules adopted by the Executive Committee the delegation fiom each club will bejo latge, that it cannot fail to represent the sentiment of the club unless* the people fail to turn out at the club meetings. There can only be one of two causes for a small attendance at the club meeting^elther indifference as to its allien;'' or carelessness about the affairs of State. A constitution is not like an act of the Legislature, enacted this year to be amended or repealed the next, but is a permanent law, seldom amended, and then at much inconvenience, and framed, not oftener as a rule, than once in a man's life. To the People of South Carolina: On the third Tuesday of August a convention will be elected which will meet at Columbia in September to make a new constitution for this State. This election will be as im portant to you as that of 1876. The men who will represent you in the convention will have mgre power . than any officials provided lor by our laws. They will create law. By their action all the legislatures, the State and county offices, and judges will be governed hereafter. All your personal and property -rights and those of your children, $our liberty and your children's liberty, the honor and prosperity and pc-ace of the State will be in_keeping of that convention If the day of election of delegates finds you disorganized, undecided, divided by factional differences, per- , sonal preferences and local interests, the politicians who control the party organization and the State election machinery, the patronge and all the official influence, will easily secure absolute control of the convention wh:ch will have such enormous power over you and yours. We believe you have too much love for your State, too much love respect foivyour own liberties and rights to surrender such power to men, whose only interest and apparent purpose is to secure for themselves perma nent place and rule, regardless of the results to the people and of the will of the people. The Conservative Democracy is the only political organization in South Carolina not controlled by the politicians who are now in office. For that reason it will offer its active i aid and co operation to all citizens who sincerely desire that the new constitution be made by free men ^ who will represent, respect and ; guard the interests and feelings of the people regardless of the ambitions and needs of politicians, such ipen to be chosen consent, if possible, by a straight untiring fight if j^cessary.
