Over there at old Cool Springs church
there is a little new crave, with the
hog weeds and the daisies growin
the sight c- rave put me to thinkin
about little Jim and the marvelsome
way in which he come to the final forks
of the road.
"The Most Strangest Death "
il have seen and heard tell of many
and many a strange and pecurious
death, you understand, but I am bound
to tell you that the most strangest

It was along in the last days of
March, if I don't remember wrong, and
one mornin the widder Dargin put little
Jim on a horse and started him off
down in the Flat Woods to look after a
yoke of oxen which had strayed and
straggled off with the dry cattle. On
their way back home the horse got
skeered, or jest naturally took up a fool
notion, and run away. lie throwed little
Jim where the ground was monstrous
hard, and when the neighbors
got there the boy was dead.

back as the records run the case of little
Jim Darpin is the first and onlyest
one that ever took place in the Ro^ky
Creek country.
The boys down here in this strip of
God's own country are about like the
* common run of boys, and I reckon little
Jim must of been a ripht smart kin
to all the rest They all play marbles
and go in swimmin and swap knives
and ride horses, and the like of that.

He is one of the best and biggest
men that the Rocky Creek country
has ever brung up and turned out to
preach the gospel to a lost and ruint

he got to be as big as the biggest in the
whole discovered country. In the
main time, you understand, he has
broke out of the woods for good and
all, and the last news I got from him
he was preaehin in some tremendius

But when Boady started out on his
first legs be use to come around now
and then and preach to the people over
at old Bark Log1 church. Old Squire
Wilson waslivin in the settlement then,
and Boady soon made an almighty big
mash on the Squire.
Now if Squire Wilson ever had any
particlar weak pint in the flesh it was
with regards to whisky. And at that
time Boady Hawthorne was about the
strongest and most terriblest temperance

ever heard or saw. He fought the whisky
devil with coat and gloves ofF?comin
and gwine?from the woodpile to
the clearin. He jumped on the whisky
soaks with both feet in mighty nigh
every sermont he preached and teliterallv
mopped up the ground with the
' dirty damnable traffic." He use to
hit Squire Wilson center shots reglar
and constant, but the old man never
| flinched. Whensomever Boady Hawthorne
held forth anywliere's around
in forty miles of Rocky Creek you could
bet your side whiskers and jour Sunday
boots that Squire Wilson was there
every clatter? right up in the dress
circle of the Amen corner?and seems
like he enjoyed every periormance
through and through.
A great word with Boadv Hawthorne
at that time was "mean licker." Anything
and everything- in the way of
spirits was "mean licker" with him,
you understand. Looks like as if he
never had seen anj'thing- but sorry
goods in the whisky line, and every
time he would jump on "mean licker"
Squire Wilson would nod his head and
smile and say "Amen."
Iiut what pestered me and the whole
settlement was that Squire Wilson had
got so dead stuck on Boady Hawthorne
as a preacher, and yet he went right on
with his hard drinkin, comin up drunk
steady and constant as ever.
By-and-by it come to pass that Boady
Hawthorne had to play quits with the
old settlement and move his washin of?
to some great city. He was in town
one day shakin the partin hand with
his friends and tellin everybody goodbye.
Squire Wilson come along?about
three sheets in the wind and" the other
one flutterin?and took him off to one
side for a private talk.
"So you arc goin to leave us are you,
Boadv?" says the Squire.
"Yes, my dear brother, and my heart
is sad and heavy in the thought," says

A Conservative's Opiuion of This
Year's Political Manoeuvres.
Columbia Register.
A Conservative from another county
who takes considerable interest in
politics and was one of the first to
applaud the Forty movement, was in
the city yesterday. In conversation
with a Register reporter, he talked of
Tillman's latest interview. Said he:
'T took stock in the Forty mcvjment
because I thought its natural
effect would be the formation of a
new faction composed of the conser- |
vative elements of the two old factions
and I hoped that this new faction
would have sufficient strength to gain j
control of things in South Carolina.
I saw that hope was vain, however,
as soon as the extreme elements of
my faction jumped on the Forty
movement and tried to run it on the
same lines on which they had made
their previous unsuccessful fights
against the Reformers.

Much as I hate the result. T
have been much amused at the masterly
way in which Tillman out-manceuvred
his opponents this year.
Had the Forty movement secured
peace in South Carolina, those who
headed it would have been big men
with the people and have loomed up

'I have been informed?and, in
fact, I know?that the original in- j
tention of the Foity was to advocate
a divison of the delegates in proportion
to strength shown by the two
factions in 1892, trusting that there

any radical action being taken in the
constitutional convention.
"That was a natural, sound, sensible
basis on which to pitch a 'peace
and unity' movement, and had that
original intention been adhered to,
the Forty would have swept the

Stokes, Wilson and others who opposed
the Forty and Tillman-Barnwell-Hemphill-Evans
plans spoke
