The State campaign opened at Rock Hill Monday, and as we have to leave for Columbia to do our press early Tuesday morning before the the mail is distributed, it is impossible for us at this time to give any accurate information as to the result of the meeting. No matter what thai result may be, however, it cannot be taken as an indication of the true sentiment of the people as to a choice between Tillman and Butler. There are several reasons why this cannot be done, chief among which might be mentioned is the fact that the A Z * i. * ^ 1*1 1. .1 1 town auu ciues conuioiueu largely to the gathering while the countrywas not so largely represented. Our information is that large crowds from towns along the railroads entering Rock Hill and from Columbia, presumably friends and supporters of Gen. Butler, left for the meeting Sunday night. Now, as the first gun in the campaign of 1894 has been actually fired, it is to be hoped that the meetings throughout the State, will be conducted in such a manner that the breach among the whites which has been opened for four long and weary years, will be closed, and that all bitterness, strife and contention will be frowned down. The candidates can brincr about this much de sired era of peace and good will by so guarding their utterances as to give do cause for ill feelings. Tillman from the 1 quietness and seclusion of his home, into the "cesspool" of politics by in- j ducing him to become a candidate 1 for Governor. It almost makes one < sick to read the fulsome praises j which some papers and their corres- < pondents are slobbering over him to 1 influence his decision, which, during his contest with Mr. Henderson of Aiken, were so bitter in their denun i f? l m I ii l ciauou oi Dim. lruiy, tne wnmigig of time goes round and the papers and tlie people and their opinions change with each revolution. It is like the game of "greasy pig"?now you see it and now you don't, or like Josh Billings' flea, you see it, measure the distance, make a grab for it, sure you have it, but when you open your hands, lo, it is not there. It will not be at all surprising to some day read in the papers that are now conspicious only for their abuse of Ben Tillman, a glowing tribute to his matchless statesmanship, genius -i i J a t ii ana patriotism. stranger tmngs than this have happened. The morning after Governor Tillman made his speech on the Dispensary System before the Prohibition Convention at Prohibition Park, on Staten Island, the Press Association sent out a report of it which, for untruthfulness, misrepresentation and studied malignity, almost rivals the reports sent out from this State by a hostile and bitter press concerning the public and private acts and utterances of the Governor. Past experience has demonstrated that the best and surest plan is to believe nothing one sees in these papers, derogatory to Governor Tillman, for when the truth comes to the surface, which it surely will sooner or later, it will ? immi u ii be found that the facts are just opposite to what they were at first stated. Some papers are trying to make political capital out of the action of the State Democratic Executive finm. mittee in providing a way for those men who strayed from the Democratic fold and wandered off after strange gods and new doctrines by voting for Weaver for President, to come back to their first love without injury to their self respect: but they were as dumb as oysters and as close as clams when the committee made the same provisions for the return of those who voted for Judge Haskell, Independent, for Governor, Dr. Ensor, Republican, for Congress and appealed to the negro to overthrow white supremacy in the State. Be consistent, gentlemen, if the committee did wrong in one case, it certainly committed the same blunder in the other. Secretary of State Tindal has consented to be led to the slaughter, by becoming a candidate for Governor. We are sorry to see such an unless sacrifice of such a good man. At a big jollify cation of Reformers of Columbia Friday night, Gen. J. S. Verner, a prominent Conservative, who, it will be remembered, was a candidate before the people in the campaign of 1890 for Comptroller General 011 the Conservative side, renounced his alligance to that faction" and connected himself with the Reformers; or, as he appropriately said, "quit the world and joined the church." There is plenty of room in the Reform ranks for many more such men of Mr. Verner's charcter and intelligence. They can do 110 good outside and should come iu and assist iu getting things righted, as they have seen them wrong. Work for the general good for the greatest number. One of our exchanges aptly inquires: "Did you hear any tiling j drop when the State newspaper quit the Democratic party?'' The Fifth Circuit will be called in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the 4th day of December, and continue four days. Prof. Marchant of Graniteville has announced himself a candidate for State Superintendent of Education. Several fertilizer companies in the State Lave been placed in the bands of receivers. Reform Democrat Clubs are being reorganized in nearly every county in the State. A Good Appetite Always accompanies good health, and an absence of appetite is an indication of something wrong. The loss of a rational desire for food is soon followed by lack of strength, for when the supply of fuel is cut off the fire burns low. The system gets into a low state, and is liable to severe attacks of disease. Telegraph Co., For Year Ending March 31, 1S9L The Lexington and Edgefield Telegraph Co., was organized April 17, ! 1S93, with 17 stockholders. The main line is 9 miles long and was constructed at a cost of $206, represented by 33 shares of stock at $6.25 each. The line with its connections is 11 miles long. The first message was sent over the line, May Y, For the year ending March 31, 1894, representing 11 months active work, there were sent as follows: Paid, 43: collect, 1G: free, 414. Total messages, 473. These messages represent a minimum amount of $47.30, which is at the rate of about 25 per cent, per annum on the investment. The cash receipts of the company for paid and collect messages aggregate $5.72. The actual expenses amount to $6.51, $1.50 of which is cancelled by a gift, leaving a balance in the treasury of 71 cents. There are now in operation 5 business offices and 2 private offices. During the year, 1 business office was discontinued; 1 moved; and 1 private office established. All the stockholders seem to be well pleased with their investment and all unite in conceding that their work has been of inestimable value to the community which it traverses. The tableau, in two parts, "Aben Ben Adhem and the angel/' was as pretty a spectacular scene as ever witness. It was not only idealistic, but realistic. Miss IAnsMeetze's impersonation of an angel was a splendid concep | tion of what we would suppose such a beautiful ethereal being to be. In fact she looked realistic enough to fly away on her snow white pinions. The recitation in this tableau by Miss May Bradford was rendered with an elocutionary ability that cannot be surpassed. Her handsome appearance added a charm to the picture, which made it pleasing and delightful to look upon. The Rainbow was rendered by 20 young Misses, as follows: Roses?
