Why Tollman "Won't DOj and
Sheppard Will.

time the Tillman fever was epidemic
over the country, I gently cautioned j
the public against being too confident |
of soiue matiers, by hinting to them !
the story of the cat in the meal tub. ,
1 said then that any change which
wore a suspicious look and promised
so much good in so little time should
be thoroughly investigated and
stirred with a long stick before ven+

It was my humble opinion then
that all this hurry and flurry was
rather dangerous at that critical
juncture in our politieal affairs. A
short time later I ventured that the
people had committed a blunder by
putting Ben Tillman at the head of
affairs. I gave as my reasons that
he was too wholesale in his accusations
and that he was not a man of
his word. But when the nominating
convention saw fit to put him before
~ W W)U1?C, ttCLj[UAeSeU,
and as a true Democrat, went to the
polls and cast my vote in his favor.
This I did in order that my vote
might count against that vile backslider,
Haskell, and not so much that
I favored Tillman. Had he not had
any opposition I should not have
gone to the polls at all for the reasons
I have given above.
Now two more years have passed
away and auother election is upon us,
and here is Ben again. Now have
my predictions been verified"? Let
us see. Does he continue his accusations
against any and everything?
Yes. he now bemeans the Legislature
for all the shortcomings of this Administration,
I mean according to
what he promised the people two
years ago. Now do not understand
me to say that the Legislature is
faultless in its work, for the last one
was about as weakneed a set of men
generally as ever darkened the doors
of the capitoh but what, I mean to
say is that Tillman has no business
berating them for Dot carrying out
pis prpzpises, whep Jje knew all the
time, even when he made his promises
to the people, that he had no power
to control them. He also stands up
before Sheppard and tells him to his
face that he is a Republican at heart,
simply because Sheppard dares to
come against him. Now if Sheppard
shpuld not abide the result of the
primary and should then come out
on an Independent ticket as Haskell
did, tnen and not before, has Tillman
any right to accuse him as above, i

campaign is nothing more than a

common decency. In fact, it is a :
libel on the good name of the State, i
and a disgrace to civilization. I say
this without personal reflection upon
any of the candidates.
And now the greatest objection of
all that I have to raise against our

profess Christianity at all. Just
think of it, a ruler over one million of
enlightened creatures who bears no
alligiance to his God. I venture to
*ay that a man who is without God
iii the world will defy the laws of
man if his interests are in that direction,
and whenever a nation drifts
from religion, it is in the hands of
anarchy. TYhen the great Napolean
came to the front in France he thew
his whole influence towards religion,

together?made men obey the laws,
mado life and property safer, and
was a safeguard against internal strife.
Webster says that back of the constitution,
Christianity is the law of the
land. The common people read the
bible more than any other book, and
their fear of infidelity is so great,
that so brilliant an orator as IngerBoll
has been forever barred from
public life on account of his yiews on
religion. If our rulers would try to
spred Christianity throughout the
land, sections, classes and factions
would eventually approach each
other in a spirit of compromise and
forbearance. In this way onlv can
h nation hope for divine blessings
without which life is pot worth living.
While Tillman is not an avowed
infidel in so many words but pretends
to acknowledge the existence of a
God yet the absence of a profession
will lead us to believe that there is
great danger in allowing him to remain
at the helm of our ship of State.

Well, yes, under certain conditions,
namely that it can be collected. Now
the idea seems to be to force the
negro to pay his proportionate share
of school tax which we all know ho
does not now do. So far so good;
capital idea! But here is the rub.
Can he be made to pay it ? He does
not now pay one dollar sometimes,
and three dollars will be much
harder to collect than one. If his
employer pays it for him he is very
apt to walk off without reimbursing j
him and that is the way it will go.

good one and I believe that the idea

A Quick Juror.
A judge was once trying a murder
case in one of the wire grass
counties, and experienced great difficulty
in getting a jury. Eleven jurors

lean, lank, cadaverous-looking fellow,
who bad on only one shoe, his pants
being nearly above his knees, his
shirt open both front and back, and
the aforesaid pants held up by a single
brace. The solicitor proceeded
to ask the usual questions in such
cases, as follows:
"Have you, from having seen the
crime committed, or having heard of
| the testimony delivered under oath,
' ' ? J ;
iormea or expressed auy opinion as
to the guilt or innocence of the prisoner
at the barf'
The single braced fellow, in a clear
and distinct voice, answered:
"Not any."
"Have you any prejudice or bias
resting on your mind for or against
the prisoner at the bar?"
"I hain't.1'
"Is your mind perfectly impartial
between the State and the accused?"
" Hit air."
"Are you conscientiously opposed
to capital punishment?"

The judge didn't like the juror
much, but it being late and jurors
scarce, he was "put on/' the prisoner
in the usual manner, the clerk sey
ing:
"Juror, look upon the prisoner;
prisoner, look upon the juror.1'
The juror was close to the prisoner
and when this command was given
he bent over him, scanning him from
head to foot intently for some minutes.
He then turned to the judge
and said in a firm, solemn voic?:
"Yes, judge, I think he's guilty.''
