THEEAY322D WILL GET THERE. | Alabama Cotton Plant. I was once the tool of oppression, As green as a sncker conld be; And monopolies banded together To beat a poor hayseed like me. The railrcads and old party bosses Together did sweetly agree, And they thought there'd be little trouble In working a hayseed like me. And at every election they fed me With taffy as sweet as could be, , Bat when they elected their ticket They forgot a poor hayseed like me, They sold themselves out to the banker, And thought it would be a fine spree To steal all the greenbacks and silver, And rob such a hayse d like me. They went into league with the devil, For the sake of a high license fee, But never a cent of the profits, Has come to a hayseed like me. Bat now I have roused up a little. And their greed and corruption I see. And my neighbors are waking around me, And find they're all hayseeds like me. And so we formed an Alliance, From oppression we're bound to be free, x ^ we vote next election, I Will be made up of hayseed like me. cnimATinuAi nrDASTMCNT huvvn i iwlink, uhi nu s114.11 * P. E. ROWELL. - - EDITOR. ?TA11 communications intended for this Department must be addressed to Mr. P. E. v Rowel 1. SCHOOL ROOM DEVICES. Ask artj set of teachers to give you some device in their daily use and at once there is an inward shrinking, a shrinking which in stantly seals the lips. Just why this is true is somewhat hard to state. A wonderful intangibility seems to clothe the simple word; especially to young teachers. They've heard and read how helpful, indeed how necessary, devices are in teaching little children, but practically the} know little about it. And yet man} of them have instinctively used, every day, numbers of good plans They feel insecure in their know! edge simply because they are unfamiliar with the foundation principle upon which they build. But granting that devices are aids why are they? Why go to the trou ble to study, up contrivances tc 1 nliilolvon V^/"\Ttr Ia vAifid r? 1 . \ a v? > tcavw v,uuvuCu iv icau auu icon Humbert What psychological pnu ciple underlies it all. Does it sa\< time in the long runt A great many persons, and person: indeed of much thought, argue tha much of the time spent in using ?? - j?t^Sefs, so called have been under the impression that they had only to tell what they knew and all would go well. They are waking up to the fact that more than this is necessary. Children do not learn things by being told. They must see; see both objectively and subjectively. Physical sight as an aid, is necessary to mental sight. Suppose for example you are teaching a number. Not one would undertake to teach the abstract number withnnf ? x' . --?^ uxou jjxebenuiig to tl2? child some object or objects. But why use so many objects; so many devices in teaching number? For this reason, the more abstract the subject matter presented the more obscure is the mental picture, hence the greater number of sense channels through which it must reach the mind, the greater number of devices. On the other hand, words are more concrete, that is, the ideas of which they are the signs are more concrete. The figure 7, the sign of the idea, is ro?11p ~ concrete, to the child, than the idea itself. Some one has said children must think upon ideas, not signs of ideas. The sooner we enable him to get ideas, the sooner he begins to think for himself: Assuredly he does so more quickly by the use of devices. Just so soon as he has the idea, let go the device. It is no longer needed. One reason so many do not meet with that success they expect is because they do not give enough time to any one plan. They hear of so , manv, and read how wonderfully sue- , , i me jLiiuuei teacner is m their ^ use, that they try, it ma} be a dozen ^ or more perfectly new. Then, too. they are unfamiliar with the prii ciples underlying them. They necessarily meet with failure and become f disgusted with themselves and their work. They do not know why, and cannot know how to use them. It maybe that a device which might appeal to one child may not be so . striking to another, but as a rule 1 children are enough alike to accept 0 like things. * A small child is so full of motion ^animal) that it is necessary to exer cise this part of his being in order to excite that attention for which we * are working. Froebel appreciated ( this fact when he originated his Kin- ^ dergarten Piay. After-all it is tInattention that we want to gain. C "When the mind is fully alert any g truth presented will find lodgement. ^ The child must be made perfectly * self-forgetful before he is ready to ? receive ideas. Now there is no bet- ^ tor plan to make him so than by the | use of attractive devices. "Watch him to see the effect of what ycu give him. If the effect is good, the cause must be good. Every teacher should thus test what he uses. If the result is not what may be desired . ri discard the plan. It will be a hinw drance rather than a help. We have only to read in the book which our t "Father has written for us"' and we n shall find innumerable devices, by ^ which He teaches His inattentive r Q children. Down in Otoe county they have resurrected an old story on Col. Van ? Wyck- that will bear repetition, in P spite of its advanced years, says the . i Nebraska State Journal. When the . ex-Senator was running for Congress in the Fiftieth New York District, party feeling was at fever heat, the . war was just over and much of its bitterness lingered in the hearts of i all men. There was a certain Dishman in Sullivan county who had steadfastly refused to give the old i man soldiers any encouragement, al- ! . though thev bad labored with him ' faithfully. The Colonel was greatly surprised, therefore, when Pat informed him on election day that he had concluded to support him. "Glad to hear it, glad to hear it," J said the Colonel; <T rather thought you were against me, Patricu. , and when you bj "me" pig pen ; and talked for two hours -\or worse, , . ye didn't budge me a hair's breadth, | , sir, but after 3'e wuz gone away to thinking how ye reached yer hand over the fence and scratched the pig on the back till he laid down wid the pleasure of it, and I made up my mind that when a rale kernel was as sociable as that, I wasn't the man t.n vote agin him."
