We did so and wore greath surprised to see the largest and mos complete stock of dry goods, cloth ing, shoes, hats, notions, etc., evei seen in this State. Mr. K. M. Anderson, a well known citizen of Columbia, where he has been for many years in business ami Reading Clerk of the House of Representatives since 187G, died in that city Monday evening. Rivers is using, besides his wheelbarrow gang, a number of wagons to haul dirt on the factor}dam, and the work is now progressing finely. o * It will be seen from a card in this issue that the Colored Alliance of this county have made an arrangement by which all the trade of its members is to be given to Messrs. J. L. Mimnaugh & Co., Columbia, in such goods as that firm sells. But few farmers have been in town since the fair weather, as the previous rains had put them behind in cotton picking and now they are utilizing every moment in trying to catch up. The ladies will be doubly pleased if they will only call when in Columbia and see the beautiful stock of hats and notions just opened at Trump's. He will surely please you both in goods and prices. Go there if you wish to be in style. Brodie and Mrs. M. E. Lathrope as teachers of the white public school and with Rev. J. H. Mixson and Ella Lowman for the colored. The biggest racket yet raised in Lexington County is caused by those who have recently received some of the astonishing bargains offered at the McCreery Racket Store Columbia. The call which has been issued for a Straight-out Conference to meet ill this city on the night of the 9th inst. has excited great interest in Columbia as well as in other sections of the State, and there is much division of opinion on the subject, but it is said that the feeling in favor of making nominations is gaining strength, and that, now that the is sue will be distinctly made, many who have previously hesitated about taking so serious a step will declare in favor of the movement.
