HHBBMgKB^ Dynamite Gunboat Launched, Its
?^HH|H Terrible Destmctiv^owers.
HHH[ The William Cramp & Sons Ship
Hfl||V^ and Engine Building Company of
Philadelphia completed and launched
^ on 28th April a dynamite cruiser gun^
boat called Yorktown, and design^
for the United States Navy. It carries
four pneumatic guns for the
' hurling of dynamite projeetives, each
with a range of at least a mile. The
training of the gans is accomplished
' by steering the vessel, and the loading
is all done by steam. The guns j
are of 15-inch calibre, and the shells, J
which can be fired with great ac
caracy twice a minate, will contain J
600 ponnda of explosive gelatine,
equivalent to 852 pounds of dynamite, j
or 943 pounds of gun cotton. It is |
claimed that this gun, properly
bandied, will be the most destructive j
engine of war yet Invented, for the j
heaviest armored ships in the world !
will go all to pieces from the explo- |
sionjof a shell moch smaller fchaD
those thrown by the* guns on the
ISTorktowD. These guns are designed j
primarily to work oa the under, water
portion of the hulls of vessels, bat if
any ioaccuracy in aim shoold be developed
on accoont of the pitching of
the ship, great damage can be in- j
fiicled upon the ball above water. A j
dynamite gun made by the same con- |
oern has just been made for the Itai !
ians, and will be tested at Fort Lafayette,
in a few days.

Insanity on fhr TTirronRO?-Wreckad KefrC
our Organisms?A I>octor'? Warning:. ^
I urge that, to be sifcoessful, our life
work must be dome with our own special
aim and ambition. But when I pickup,
an essay that advises more ambition, and
more toil, I say the writer is an idiot.
The age is now oveworked. We need
less work, but we nee&it wisely directed.
Bailey, in Festus, is* often aprovingly
quoted: ' ~ ^ '*f
I know what study is?it is to toil
t Hard through the hours of the midnight watch;
Wring a slight sleep out of the couch; and see
The self same moon, which lit us to our rest,
II jr place scarce changed, perceptibly in heaven,
Now iight its to renewal of our toiL
This is worse than .trash; it is false, exaggerated
and misleading. There is jao
lack of work; -but f'tlly nine-tenths of
work is wasted, It^js folly to point me
to the great painter^peat.musicians and
great of all sorts.. ahd to their inde
fatigable toil. - They all worked to a
specific end, and that was their life work.
I am out of all patience with finely'
worded essays that urge young men to
more work. "We are now overworked
and are working ourselves out of all
reason. Insanity is on the increase.
Cerebral troubles are our most serious
ills. Our finely built nervous organisms
are being, wrecked. 'The successful
banker must take his bank to bed with
him," was the remark of a celebrated
New York financier. He must do nothing
of the kind. Our worst possible
bed fellows are our daily cares. We
must know how to work to a point and
- ho w to stop at a point. The lines quoted
from Festus describe a process of committing
suicide, a method of reaching intellectual
confusion and weakness. This
worries me more than anything else, that
young people should be advised to work
at night, and be encouraged to "burn
the midnight oil." I say to them, sleep."
If you once form a habit of crowding
sleep you will find your strength departing.
Vigor lies in your power tb recuperate.
:
** There is no compensation for a habit of
sleeplessness. More good work can be
done in one hour after a sound night's
rest than in ten hours when one should
bo asleep. "I can do nothing," said
! Grant, 4-without eight hours' sleep."
Jarues Fields said late in life, "If I were
a boy again, I would keep better hours;
that is, I would go to bed earlier than
i most boys.do. Nothing gives more men-*
tal and bodily vigor than sound rest when
properly applied. If we sit up late we
decay; and sooner or later we oontract
insomnia. Late hours are shadows of the
grave." I do not press this point because
I inherit a Puritan prejudice, but
have a physician's conviction, founded on
wide experience. If you are ambitious
to do a true, stout, manly work, apply
your energies all along the line of the
years in one direction, or in few directions,
and never crowd the brain to
undue exertion when it is weary.?M.
Maurice, M. D., in Globe-Democrat
Invented by a Woman.
There are many instances where
women have "invented" articles for convenience
and of practical usefulness, for
which a- patent has never been applied,
though not the less patentable or appreciated,
as the following instance, which
shows not only the ability but the genius
with which she is by nature endowed.
The article was devised (?) by a woman
in Connecticut, the fatherland of inventive
genius and Yankee ingenuity, the
land of steady liabits, wooden clocks,
wooden nutmegs and red oak hams.
The lady was one day using the carving
knife, which probably, from tbo frequent
contact with bones and the stovepipe,
which a woman generally uses for a
cteel, with uncertain results, had become
rather dull, and the handle of winch, in
her frantic efforts to "carve dat possum,"
twisted about and hurt her delicate
digits.
At last., aftef several desperate and
hazardous attempts, she turned sharply
to her better half, who sat by calmly
viewing the situation, and probably .reflecting
on thtefjK&oes of' life ami-death
and the _ a square, fneal, and
v about and hurt so?' With
fear and trembling lest his answer should
causb liis irate spouse to scalp him on the
spot, the good man answered that he
could not. "Well I can, *' was the reply,
and with the impetuosity proverbial
lier sex she left the. room and soon rt/
turned with a triumphant air and a pier
of putty, which she soon had shap^* to
fit her hand, and, holding it up J* to?
admiring, though crestfallen, loA said:

Colored Cl^e"8' Excursion.
With the runA^g of the first excursion
train in. the spring the old nomadic instinct
awaked in the bosom of the colored
citizens. They must go somewhere. The
-destination is of Zittle moment, the journey
is everything. To the pine woods of
Mississippi, among the villages, of the
Gulf coast, even to the penitentiary at
* Baton Rouge, they swarm upon the legate
tar ^excursion days. No matter how
sultry "tb? wither, they pack into the
cars, an indiscriminate mass of shouting
men, struggling women and shrieking
babies; and, wherever'their journey may
j terminate, they are allowed for that day
1 almost exclusive possession of the town.
Evening comes. The whistle sounds,
and all who purpose returning crowd
upon the train. Few, howeveh, are the
parties of excursionists who do hot leave
some of their number in durance, souvenirs
to the town which they have
visited of an exciting day.?Cor. New
