What the foundation is to a building,
agriculture is to all other kinds
of business. In the first place, though i
there are localities in which the natural
productions of the earth would
suffice to sustain th$ life of man, with
the fruits of hunting and fishing, it!
would reduce him to an unnatural
condition?to one repulsive to his
* high state of civilization. His nature;
would soon revolt at the i<iea of sub-j
sisting upon these products, which in
their natural condition are unpalatable,
and yet so much improved by
cultivation; but in order to accomplish
which, agriculture becomes a j
necessary occupation.
Again, it is very certain that many j
of the industries of the land depend j
upon the production of the farmer, j
The wheat that keeps the mill in ope- j
ration, the wool that keeps the wool-1
en factory, and the cotton that Keeps;
the cotton and thread factories, the
silk that keeps the silk factory, the
leather that keeps the tannery and I
shoe factory, the lumber that keeps j
the mechanics and wooden factories
at work; all are* products of the farm,!
or come from the farmer. And so, !
too, the necessities of the farmer far-!
nish employment in the manufacture j
of various implements and machines
required in his business. Hence, agriculture
becomes a necessary occupation.
Still again, where there are so:
many and divers professions and oc-}
cupations that employ so large aj
number of hands, who, when so employed,
are unable to produce from
the soil the necessaries of life, another
portion must be employed in
tilling the soil, or else in a short time
starvation and famine would prevail.
So again agriculture becomes a ne- i
cessary occupation.
But according to the generally re- i
ceived definition, the tilling of the J
soil in all its forms, such as the pro- J
daction of crops, the raising and im-'
provement of stock for the dairy, and
other purposes, is denominated agri-:
culture; therefore no other conclusion
can be arrived at, than that agricul-!
ture is a necessary occupation, and as
such should be properly respected,;
and receive a due share of attention :
and regard from other professions,
and occupations, for according to
present indications but few years will
elapse ere the power of the agriculturist
will be felt from one end of the
land to the other, and will receive
the full 6hare of respect to which be
is entitled, but which, in years gone
by, has been withdrawn.?Exchange.
Sow Indians Farm.
A gentleman just op from Standing
Rock Agency, in answer to an
inquiry as to how the reds were progressing
in the peaceful ways of
graDgering, smiled and said their
manner was odd. Every year they
seem to know less about how to farm.
This is attributed to the fact that
they are learning the ways of the
whites too rapidly. They begin to
understand that as soon as they can
grow crops their rations will oe cut
off, and hence their growing ignorance
of agriculture. If they are
given a bushel of beans to plant, they,
will eat nine-tenths of the amount
and plant one-tenth, and the onetenth
will be dumped in three or
four holes in the ground. Last
spring they were given five bushels of
onion seeds. They couldn't eat them,
and consequently planted the entire
live bushels-on a piece of ground fifty
by one hundred feet. They were too
!azy to prepare a larger patch; besides
it would have been contrary to
their policy of maintaining the ration
system. When ihe onions came up
it was a curious sight to see the
young stinkers crowed each other.
The whole dry, naked surface of the
ground was raised up on top of the
sprouting plants. It is our informants
opinion that the present generation
of Iojuns will not make
successful grangers.?Bismarck Tribune.
F&yjp. Notes.
It is the wise farmer who plants no
more than he can thoroughly till and
care for.
Sow mangels, sugar beets, 'carrots
and parsnips as early as possible, and
fit the land thoroughly before putting
in the seed.
Melons, cucumbers and squashes
are cultivated in the same manner,
hnfc thev should never be olanted
near each other.
In highly bred and liberally-fed;
animals the teeth are produced earlier
than in those living under the reverso
conditions.
One acre of land well prepared and
well tilled produces more than two
which receive only the- same amount
of labor used on cue.
One pound of oilcake, says a distinguished
French chemist, is equal j
to three pounds of cornmeal, nine j
pounds of bran or ten pounds of bay.!
For an apple orchard select ground!
that will raise a good crop of potatoes.
The soil should be well pulverized.
Such ground will never be too.
moist. i
It is important to spread manure
evenly and at once when drawn, so
that the entire surface of the field
gets the benefit. If some parts are
poorer, apply more manure, bat put
it on evenly. Then the growth will
.11 fnll pan

be grown wiLhout. Always harrow
over to even it.
Lately we have been far to the
north, to the south, to the east, to
the west in our county, and we think
wo can securely say that the corn is
made almost absolutely safe. And it
is very abundant. There will be
more corn made in Edgefield this
year than for many a year before.
And the cotton prospect at present is
equally flattering.?Advertiser.
A farmer says: Four years ago my
barn was fearfully infested with rats.
They were so numerous that I feared
having my whole crop destroyed by
them after it was housed; but after
harvesting two acres of wild peppermint
that grew in a field of wheat, it
drove the rats from my premises. I
have not been troubled with them
since, while my neighbors have any
quantity of them in their buildings.
