VAluc of ICaxmres. )\\ Lawes, of Rothampstead, Eng]nd, found in the course of his ex?eriments in great growing that a certain field would produce fifteen bnshels of wheat annually per acre j without the application of any manure whatever. The application of a J/ small amount of nitrogen enabled him to double the crop, showing that j for the time being, at least, nitrogen i was in less supply than the otber required elements. But he also found j that if he added the nitrogen in the j form of stable manure, he was apply- j x _ iag it at an expense of four or five times as great as if he applied it in the form of sulphate of ammonia. The lesson to be learned by such experiments is that there is no best manure or fertilizer for all soils, nor is the same manure certain to be the bast for a given soil in all years. The soil is constantly changing under cultivation aud cropping, and the most intelligent system of manuring is the oie which supplies just what the present crop requires in order to jl ;av.u a uJUAiiiiaiu a/vvw and potatoes soon exhaust a soil of its potash, and therefore potash must b?s^)plied freely, or some other crop growifcthat will require less. The farmer j should be prompt teflecide, and alsos j prompt to execute. He must plan weL, tmd have a mental memorandum of day's daties always in his mind. Beginning with the dawn, he most take np all of his chores, and labor in each in its proper time and turn, and execute them in successive and regular order. Unless the farmer does this he will not succeed in keeping his work all before him. Something will be forgotten or neglected, and then some other work wili be hastily or slovenly done, aud then another, and so on, till everything i> at odds and ends without order or system, and generally withont the promise of any satisfactory results to reward the farmer for all his pains. But system does everything smoothly and at the right time. It keeps the work well ahead. None of the duties of one dhy are deferred to another. Consequently, there is no driving or fretting. The teams are not irritated and made refractory, nor the implements straimed and broken. The workmen do their duties with more cheerfulness, and they do more. There is nothing lost by undue friction. System is an excellent lubricator; it keeps everything in joint, and all doing serviceable work. Have system, by all means have systec^Jt is equal to a savings bank, for muscle, means and time is so much' gained. Have a plan for each week and for each day. Don't make your work the football of chance, but have system and defy chance. It is-said that an acre of grass ycjll make 200 pounds of beef; while an acre of corn, that requires continuous labor, at double the cost, will do but little more. fejSz .
