Falb desired to visit one of those beautiful
valleys of the Addes, whose 'chief
attractions consist in luxuriant tropical
growth, endless variety of Fauna aud
primeval solitude. Two snch valleys
were accessible from Cuzco, the one, tbaf
of Sama Auna in the North, tbe other
that of Paucartambo in the east, on tin
eastern slope of the Cor 'i leras R-a

the numerous earningst?f anxiousfriends
and traveled without military escort, although
the ferocious aborigines of that
region have an indomitable hatred against
all pale faces.
A very interesting ride over steep
mountain sides and through arid valleys
brought Fall) to Paucartambo, the Ultima
Thule of civilization in that direction
Here be made the acquaintance of two
Germans who carried on a trade with
cascavilla, the medicinal bark of a tropi ;
cal tree; they had a settlement in the I
backwoods of Paacartambo, and as one
of the firm was on the point of visiting
that sequestered spot, Faib gladly em
braced the opportunity to make the tedious
and often ever perilous journey in
company of the merchant and bis Indian '
servant. The throe followed the winding |
bridle path up the steep f. scent and
reached, at the end of their first day's
journey, the watershed of the Cordilleras
at an elevation of 14,000 feet, above sea
level. Here a grand auu beautiful pano
rama unrolled itself before them; towards
thrt we't spread an ocean of heavenscaling
snow and cloud capped mountains
interspersed with charming valleys,
towards the east the horizon-bounded j
virgin forest descended into the lowlands j
where, a:uid rank vegetation, several Irih-1
ntaries of the mighty Amazon have their !
source. Qui'e wonderful was here, almost
from the highest summit, the contrast
between the eastern and the west- j
slope of the mountain, this bare and arid
that moist and covered with dense vegetation.
Although it was May, the driest
portion of the year, jet the travelers must
^ often dismount to lead their fiigbtened
^ ^ mules over the soft, oozy bottoms. The
\?th which Uley follo wed in their descent
wa4 formed by the remains of an Inca
ro&cl, much used in tin.es gone bv, when
the Incas and their warlike neighbors
lived in continual f ud, but now seldom
trod by Cancassuu or Indian, especially
since the latter have destroyed all white
settlements in the valley with the excep
tion of San Miguel, the casea villo farm,
our traveler's destination.
The settlement was very unpretending
in all but the name; it consisted of a sing'e
hut which sheltered the two Indians
engaged in obtaining the bark, and thenGerman
overseer, ia whom Fulb found a
highly educated young man, well < alcu
lated to assist, and, from his acquaintance j
with the surroundings, to guide the ar j
dent explorer. For seven weeks F.db j
enjoyed the primitive life in this tropical j
paradise and during that time became j
acquainted with severed uaiives who vis I
ited San Miguel They appeared w ell j
disposed towards the pale faces and j
showed their perfect trust and friendly
feeling by returning in about a week with
their wives and children; to one of the
women, an Indian b^lle, with handsome
features and graceful shape, Fulb gave a i
bright silver coin which she at once suspended
on a riiiu in her?nose, with the :
joyful cry koriie, brrihr (silver, silver ) |
Mesdames les satiuages enjoy liuety as!
much as their highly civilized sisters; in
default of precious metals and feeius they '
decorate their necks and armstflfcb- triogs j
of the teeth and bones of monkeys and '
eveu fasten the larger bones upon the!
one garment which they usually wear. I

LIVER PILLS,
FOR THE CURE OF
Hepatitis, or Liver Complaint,
DYSPEPSIA AND SICK HEADACHE.
Symptoms of a Diseased Liver.
PAIN in the right side, under the
edge of the ribs, increases on pressure;
sometimes the pain is in the left
side; the patient is rarely able to lie
on the left side; sometimes the pain is
felt under the shoulder blade, and it
frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken
for rheumatism in the arm. The
stomach is affected with loss of appetite
and sickness; the bowels in general
are costive, sometimes alternative
with lax; the head is troubled with
pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy
sensation in the back part. There is
generally a considerable loss of memory,
accompanied with a painful sensation
of having left undone something
which ought to have been done.
A slight, dry cough is sometimes an
attendant. The ualient comolains of
weariness and debility ; he is easily
startled, his fee* are cold or burning/
ar.d he complains of a prickly sensation
of the skin; his spirits are low;
and although he is satisfied that exercise
wo aid be beneficial to him, yet
he can scarcely sermon up fortitude
enouirh ic try it. In fact, be distrusts
every remedy. Several of the above
svmpt-.vr.s attend the disease, hut cases
have occurred where few of them existed,
yet examination of the body,
alter derail, has shown the liver to
have been extensively deranged.
AGUE AND FEVER.
Dr. C. McLanUs Liver Pills, is
casks of Aoui-: and Flvkr, when
taken'with Quinine, are productive of
the most happy results. No better
cathartic can be used, preparatory tc,
or after taking Quinine. We would
advise all who are afflicted with this
disease to give them a fair trial.
For all bilious derangements, and as
