Rush and Rock Gay lord, who t
were trie 1 in the court of General c
Sessions yesterday for the ranr
der of Will Kenuedy, were found e
guilty of murder, but recoui- t
mended to the mercy of the court c
The killing for which the Gaylords
were tried took place about
five months ago in the lower part
of this county near the Laurens ,
line, at a church meeting of some a
kind. , 8
Judge Speak complimented the I
grand jury of Huntsville, Ala. on j
its report made on Monday and c
the compliment was deserved. A <
negro killed a poor white peddler 1
near Huntsville. He was put in t
jail. The mob set fire to the jail r
endangering the lives of many 11
of the prisoner**, and when tho 1
murderer jumped from a window *
they butchered hiua. The grand {
jury recommends jhe impeach v
ment of the sheriff, the maym
and chief of police.- As the
military officers on the ground are
to he court-martialed, the grand ]
jury goes no farther than to say j
the commander was incompetent t
and ignorant of his duty. The j
civil officers signally failed and ]
the action of governor and grand f
jury is most gratifying. A white t
man murdered a poor peddler in B
Aiken oountv some time ago. ^
Tho nai?h^""- ? !
..w.^u'iwio >voi^ incensed at e
first but in a few days sympathy ^
for the living began to grow and t
finally in tho face or absolute evi- H
ilence, a jury seized upon the

by the criminal as excuse to set

As to what may bo happening
in the f ir East, there is little definite
information from any <piar ter.
l'he armies in tlie vicinity
of Mukden appear to bo limiting
their activities at present to fool
ing ino position of their adversaries.
It is supposed to bo the
plan of the Japaneso to possess
themselves of the passes of the Da
mountain range before making a
direct attack on Mukden. Strategic
and present considerations
seem to make it essential that
Gen. Kuropatkin make a stand
there and prevent the town from
being made the winter headquurtors
of tho .Japanese, while the
lack of adequate facilities eisowhere
for the housing of troops
during a rigorous Manchurian
winter make it necessary that the
Japanese bond all their energies
to the capture of that town.
