VAUOLU8K MAN SHOT HIMSELF.
Aiken, July 20. ? Mr. Chas.
Steele, h young man 23 years of
age, shot himself through the head
with a revolver at the homo of his
brother, William Steele, in Vanciuse,
on Sunday afternoon. His
brain was pierced with the bullet
and it is reported here today that
ho is dying. Disappointment in
love is suid by some to be the cause
of his act, and by others it is
thought that his brain was effected
by cigarette smoking. I
SOUTHERN MILL MEN AO REE TO CURTAIL.
Greenville, .July 26.?Cotton
manufacturers of South Carolina,
North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama
and Mississippi after a bnef con~
ference and discussion this afternoon
by a vote of 2,183,052 spin
dies against 100.099 adonted res.
lutions that all nulla representee]
agreed that production shall bo ro
duced during the months of August
and September 25 per cent.
Conditions aifecting the business
at the present time were discussed
and an exchange of ideas as to the
bost course to pursue in an effort
to place things on a bettor footing
was had. There is such a wide
margin between the price of raw
cotton and the selling price of the
finished product that many mills
have been running at a direct loss
for some time. The manufacturers
believe the dry goods market
should be placed on a more satis.,
factory basis, and that benefit will
result from concerted action.

The newspapers of the state are
very generally urging the people
to send only the best men to the
legislature. Too often voters are
swayed by some sentiment, or
captivated, we may say, by some
peculiarity of speech or manner of
candidates and they vote for them
regardless of their mental or other
qualificatonsfor a seat in the house
of representatives. Any one who
has visited the legislature has seen
men of thin character r?n the flnnr
The agitation started by the nows-1
papers ought to, and will doubt- J
less, result in good. If it does we
will have a i"ar better cluss of lawmakers
and not so much confusion
and petit legislation. If the peo* j
pie will only sond their best men ,
to the legislature they will soon
appreciate the fact that it is not at |
all necessary to have annual sessions.?Columbia

More Liquor Is Being Sold.
Special to Greenville News.
Columbia, July 27. ? Chief
Constable llaiumet, in his quarterly
report, says;
By refering to the previous report
you will tind that there is a
considerable decrease in the value
of seizures made and a very
heavy increase in the sales of tho
dispensaries throughout tho State.
This, I think, is attributed to the
better enforcement of tho law.
Certainly, there is not as much
liquor Qbroughtinto this State
as formerly. Quite a number of
persons who have been engaged i n
retailing liquor have gone out of
the business, and you will note
that 27 illicit still have been clos?
ed up.

the trustees to go abend and Mas- s

Several claims have been made
for largo sums. Those claims
have been disputed, and the trustees

There are some who still urge that .
the fund ought to be kept intact
and that the time may come when
this money if kept together may
be used to advantage in some contest
and that to distribute it would
a
moan so little to the original contributes
as to amount to almost
nothing, especially if there arc to

litigation.
No False Claims
The proprietors of Foley's
Honey and Tar do not advertise
this as a "sure cure for consumption."
They do not claim that it
will enre this dread complaint in
advanced cases, but do positively
assert that it will cure in the earlier
stages and never fails to give
comfort and relief in the worst
cases. Foley's Iloney and Tar is
without doubt the greatest throat
