Big Whiskey Fire in Peoria.

completely wrecked the building, t
The ruins immediately took tire t
and communicated to three ad. 1
joining buildings, burning them to *
the ground. Ten men were buried
beneath the ruins and burned to
death, and six others wore seriously
injured. The loss on buildings
and whiskey and spirits f
stored will approximate $1,000,- 1
000. The tire spread to the stock c
yards' district, whore a dozen '
cattle barns, tilled with cattlo for v
market wero burned. 1
The ware bouse, containing in ^
the neighborhood of 30,000 bar- 1
rels of whiskey, was instantau - 11
eously u seething caldron and 11
the whiskey from the burning
barrels flooded everything in that
section. Large streams ran
down grade toward the river, and
in a short time there was a foot CJ
of whiskey in the cattle pons east j
of the ware house, whore 2,000
steers waro chained fast. Their '1
distress lasted but a few moments
however, for they were soon *(
roasted to death or suilocated.
They were tbo property of Dood
and Koifer, of Chicago. It is n
impossible to compute their loss-,
but it will amount to thousands n

Myers and Ilunter Sharp ware
wounded by Put Corrol in a
shooting affair tonight which had

and Corroll a few minutes
previously.
According to the story of several
witnesses the trouble was
thought to have been ended when
Uorroll opened liro ?n Caulfield
lend his friends, a few blocks from
Uautiold's house, to which the
lattor was on the way, being attended
by his friends. Corroll is
said to have remarked on turning
into Hasell street, "I've got
Uaultield where 1 want him. At

block and a half when Caul field

suddenly stopped, probably seeing
Carroll with his pistol in
front of him,and immediately tiro
was opened. Caul field had turned
and received his death wound in
his back. Carrol emptied bis
pistol into the party, shooting
Meyers in the arm and Sharp in
the leg.
Carroll was arrested about 10
o'clock, a half hour after the

caused great excitement,
Caultield was formerly a dislensary
constable and is thought
