Deatli of.I. K. Lunglcy.
Mr. John B. Langloy, formerly
of the Antioch section hut who
has boon living near Lindsay this
ycur, died last Friday, May 6,
1904, of dropsy. Mr. Lsngley
was about 60 years of age and was
a well known (Confederate veteran
of the county. Ho served throug
the war in Co. 1., 12th S. C.
Regt., and was a brave and fearless
soldier. He was twice wounded
in battle, on one occasion being
left on tho field for dead by
his comrades when a heavy rain
during tho night, it is said, revived
him and saved his life.
Mr. Langley is survived by his
widow and five or six children.
His remains were interred at Gills
Creek gravo yard on Saturday.
?The following is taken from
the Lancaster correspondence of
the News and Courier: Mr M. C.
Gardner, a successful farmer of
Flat Creek Township, has a remarkable
record for the discharge
of his poHtical and other public
duties. It too frequently happens
that men on account of their private
affairs will dodge jury duty
and stay away from club meetings
and conventions, but such is not
the case with Mr Gardner. He has
ever made it a rule never to allow
his business and farming interests
to interfere with the discharge of
bis obligation as a citizen. He has
attended as a delegate from his club
every Democratic convention that
has been^held in Lancaster in
twenty eight years, notwithstanding
he lives over twenty milesfrom
the court house. Nor has he ever
failed to attend a meeting of his
club, of which he has been president
for twenty six years.
The beautiful monument recently
erected to tho late and lamented
H. W. Broom in the
cemetery at Waxhaw Baptist
church, will be unveiled with ap
propriate ceremonies by the W.
O. W. on ihe 5th Sunday in this
month at 11 o'clock. There will
be a sermon by tome able minister
yet to be selected, but there
?i!l nf rouurse be no picnic or
other oxercises beyond the simple
but impressive religious ceremony
at the grave, and the sermon.?

Letter to J. L. Poae;.
Lancaster, S. C.
Dear Sir : "It costs as much
to put on poor paint as good1'?
a common saying and true?it
costs much more to put on poor t
paint; more gallons.
Poor paint is paint and barytes
or paint and sand or paint and
i lime or paint and chalk or paint
and benzine or paint and water ;
these are the usual cheats ; there
are others.
It takos more gallous of paintand-a-choat
thau of honest paint;
and the cost of the labor of painting
is so much a gallon?one
gallou costs as much as another,
for labor.
, This is the way to reckon your
costs for this year ; but how about
next year ? j
, Paint Devoe, aud uext year |
costs nothing; year after next
the same ; the same for several
years.
Paint anything else, and your .
i costs recur according to what
you paint with. Some of the
mixtures wear one year ; some
two ; some three.
It costs twice, three times, <
four times, five times, as much (
to paint with a cheat as to paint
with Devoo. :
