Snffocated Trying To Escape.!
Jesse Henderson, Convictod Murderer,
Lost Life Attempting
To Burn His Way Out
of Jail.

Edgefield, April 8. ? On Thursday
night about 8 o'clcck the jail
of Edgefield was found to be on
fire It was first discovered by
Dr. J. Y. L'attison, who was passing
on his way homo. The alarm
was given and the acting jailer,
Mr. John Faulkner, when awakened,
found the cell in which

ucoso nenuer?on, colored, was
confined was on tire. Henderson
had used his lamp to set fire to
his cell. When his cell door was
opened he was lying on the floor
dead from suffocation. A hole
was burned through the floor and
but little damage other than this
was done. lie was evidently trying
to burn a hole through which
to make his escape, but sotfocated
before he had accomplished hit
object.
Henderson is the negro who on
iast Sunday night made an effert
to escape by throwing cayenne
pepper into the jailor's eyes. He
was under life sentence for killing
a negro in a church last year and
was to have been sent to the pen
itentiary in Columbia.

Protected Juryman.
Richmond, V*., April 8.?
Judge Clopton of the corporation
court of Manchester received a letter
from the secretary of a prominent
tobacco company requesting
that one of their foremen be excused
from jury duty and stating
that if the foreman was not at
work today the company might
be compelled to employ some one
else in hie place permanently.
The judge at once ruled the
secretary into court for contempt
and he purged himself under oath
but was informed that if the foreman
was discharged another summons
would be issued and the
judge would hold that the threats
had been carried ou1, and declare
the secretary guilty of contempt.
Morgan Gets Twenty Years.

upon Henry Morgan, convicted of
having burned the business portion
of this town a few weeks ago.
Immediately after ths imposition
of the sentence today, the trial of
Sidney Harrell, indicted upon the
same charge as Morgan, was commenced,
but a continuance was
granted when one of the attorneys
became ill. Both prisoners, under
$10,000 bends, wore taken to
Araericus for safe keeping.

that Miss Ludwig of Pansy, Ga.,
daughter of Mr. Louis Ludwig ^
and granddaughter cf Mr. Win. ^
Ludwig of this town, committed ^
suicide yesterday afternoon. She,
with sereral members of the fam ily,
were playing flinch when she
quietly withdrew from the game
and going to her brother's room
procured his revolver and made

about a half mile from the house, 1
where she placed the weapon to
her temple and fired. The body
was found the next morning about
