i A Story of Fitz Lee.

and Gov. Candler of Georgia
were together in a hotel in Atlanta

the general if ho lia<! ever known
of a witty darky. 'Yes,1 said the
general, 'one.' Whon Gen. lio1
hurt S. Lse was fighting Grant in
1 the "last days" an old darkey
! besieged headquarters with rei'
quests to see "the gin'ral." Ho
was turned away a dozen limes.
1 But one day ho succeeded in
1 reaching the guard immediately
in front of Gen. Leo's tent, and
almost got into the tent itself before
ho was stopped. The alter1
cation which followed was overhoard
by Gen. Lee, who called
out: "Let that man come in!"
' Then into the tent enmo the fellow,
a rawboned, shambling,
gray-headed, gnarled old darkey,
who scraped the ground with his
i foot and kept turning his hat
around nprv(int.lv in hio
%( ^ ??VVell, where do you be>
long?'7 demanded Gen. Loe.
" 1 ''I b'longs to y'r company,
gin-ral," returned the darky.
(i t yOU don't," .declared
the general, sharply. * 'Everybody
in my crmpany has been
shot. How is it that you haven't
1 been?"
" 'The darkey scratched his
bend. Then from his twisted
mouth came a confidential whisper.
"Well, you see, gin'ral it's
this a-way. I ain't been shot,
'caze whan dey's a tight goin' on
I always stays with the gin'rals."
' "
That does not "sound like"
Gen. Robert E. Lee. We doubt
if Gen. Gordon has been correctly
quoted. If he has been, he has
gotten old Gen. Lee mixed up with
Fitz Lee.
The story as it has been always
told in jVirginia is as follows.
When Filz Lee was making his
canvass for governor, and when
upon a platform at a public meet*
ing in ono of the counties near
Lynchbufg, he was told that an
old colored man wished to come
up and shuke hands with him. He
said: ''All right; let him come,"
and the old darkey was soon afterwards
brought forward and in?
troduced t? him.
Old Uncle Ben, for that was
his name, said to Filz Lee that he
h.-.d been in the Confederate army
from tirst to last, with his (Ben's)
} oung master. The general ask
ed him to what command his master
belonged. Uncle Ben replied.
"Longstreet's." The general
then suggested to Ben that he had
probably seen some hard fighting.
Uncle Bon said, yes, he had been
in many battles. "And which
do you think was the hottest
one?" ho was asked by Fitz Lee.
"Why," responded Uncle Ben,
"Gettysburg was by long odds
the wust f ever seen," and ho added,
"1 tell you the truth, general;
at Gettysburg I runned like a
dog." "Where did you ruu to?"
inquired Fitz Lee. "I ran to the
safest place I could find," said
the old fellow. "And where wss
that?" said his good-humored
questioner. "I runnrd to where
the gin'rals wore," promptly re
sponded the old man.
This ready response ?this nn
liiiunueu jok? me generals
brought forth a penl of laughter
from Fitz Lee and the crowd of
people around him. 'I he rtory
was often repeated as one of the
incidents of the campaign. (}<n.
Fitz Lee himself was delighted to
tell it and to give tJncIo Hen
credit for hi8 sagacity in seeking
a place of refuge on the field of
battle.
