As Chronicled by the Alert Correspondent
of The Columbia
State.
MR. YARN'S MURDKBEU.
Bamberg, Nov. 23.?The jury
of inquest over the body of M.
B. Varn, who was murdered here
last Thursday night, convened
again In the court house this after
UUUD. *
Several witnesses were examine
ed, but practically no additional
1 light was thrown 011 the tragedy.
' Testimony was given showing that
Joseph llobinson, one of the nogroes
arrested, was at n night
school in another part of town at
the time of tho killing and remained
there until a late hour. It
seems that he will be able to prove
an alibi. Warron claims ho went
home early and went to bad. Tom
Matery, tho other negro, was released
while the inquest was in
session.
The jury returned n verdict aftor
a long doMberation that Mr.
iViirncumeto his death at the
i hands of unknown parties.
iwtivr.su.U UN A CHANGE OE AKSON.
Laurens, Nov. 22.?On the
charge of arson two young white
men, Broadus ami Lannie Lollis,
sons of Jack Lollis, a somewhat
noted house trader ol this section
of the county, have beeD arrested
and committed to jail. A few
nights ago the horse of Mrs. El
len Owens, a neighbor of tht
Lollises, was destroyed by fire,
entailing considerable loss to tht
lady and at the sauio time jeopardizing
othor property including
her dwelling by reason of the
proximity of the several structures.
Fiom the lirst there was
a strong apprehension that the
fire was of incendiary origin.
The following day some investigation
was made with the result
that two suspicious tracks were
discovered, ono of which was
readily identified as that of ono
of the accused by reason of a peculiar
deformity of one of hie
feet. The tracks led to their
home and it was concluded that
the other track corresponded to
that made by the brother. Hence
their arrest and incarceration.
TI1E ORANGEBURG ICE FACTORY A
TOTAL LOSS.
Orangeburg, Nov. 24.?Tho
ice factory of the Orangeburg
Brick and Ice company was burn
ed at 0 o'clock this eveniug. Tho
plant is located near the Ediato
river, in the western suburbs of
the city and was entirely beyond
roach of water protection, so that
the loss is total. Tho plant is mo
dorn, having been completed
early in 1902, and cost $27,000.
The total insurance carried
amounts to only $18,000 so that
the loss is $14,000.
This loss falls on Mr. L. C. A.
ltoessler, who is sole owner of the
plant,
WORK OF INCENDIARIES.
Newberry, Nov. 24.?Last
night about 9 o'clock the [^barn
and stftbles of Mr. S. B. All at
Jalapa woro completely destroyed
by fire. The loss is ft boavy one,
amounting to not less than $2,000,
and most unfortunately there
was not a dollar of insurance. In
the building wore 500 bushels of
corn and 8 mules besides a quantity
of fodder and other rough
food, all of which wus totally do
I
stroycd. Mr. Aull thinks the
origin of the fire was incendiary.

Jew and cannot become an AngloSaxon
and should not wish to become
cither. Iio can be a negro
and it is his chief business to bo a
good negro. In tho kingdom of
human life virtuo is not a matter
of color, and the negro should
learn to respect his ,color. Tho
blacker he is tho surer he may be
of racial integrity, and whatever
ho may come to he he must come
