The citizens of Kershaw have raised several hundred dollars, procured a tine brass band and will proparo a barbecue dinnor foP 2,500 people on the occasion. Gov. Heyward, Senator Latimer, Mr. F. H. Hyatt and other prominent speakers are expoctcd. Wo urgo citizens from all sections of the county to attend this meeting. "I)r " Susan Johiv*on in Umbo. "Dr. Susan1' is an old negro woman of about the samo avoirdu pois as our ponderous Magistrate. Wo don't know where she hails from but tho old woman is in trouble just now. Sho Was committed to jail here yesterday to await trial at the next term of court on three charges: Practicing medicine without license and on two charges for swindling. It soems that Susan claimed to bo a doctor and was practicing uuiong negroes. Sho proposed to cure Wesley Jackson, col., who has been sick for some time, if his family would pay her $4. in advance. She got tho money and then skipped the town and would still be out of town had not Constable Connor overtaken her and bi ought her back. Tlio Veterans Enjoy Themselves. Wednesday was veteran's day bero. They were here from all parts of the county to atttend the big pic-nic given them by the : Luncaster Chapter Daughters of the Conferacy. That they enjoyed the day goes without saying. Simple to get together, exchange hand-shakes and talk over their war experiences affords unbounded pleasure to tho hoary headed defenders of the Southland, but j to this was added tho enjoyment I of a most excellent dinner?a I feast of good things?and tho , further pleasure of listening to a j splendid speech by one of their j old comrades in arms, Rev. Dr. Jus. 11. Thornwell, of Fort Mill. Throughout his speech tho doctor was frequently interrupted by deafening applause. Judge Jones, j Rev. J. li.
