Tho News nod Courier says c
that in six months there have been ^
S3 convictions of blind tigers in
the city court of Charleston, each ,]
being lined $c0. That revenue i
ot $4,150 is, it says, "not to be "
sneezed at in these dull times." '

being a liltlo puzzled l?y the fai t |
that while convictions can bo had
in the city court, not even a true I
bill caa ho obtained against 1
the dealers in the court of ses- !
sions. Truly it is strange that so j
many Charlestonians will porjure i
themselves. The ultimate result 1
will bo that the grand juries will
bo guided by their sympathy in f
all cases instead of by the "law
J i
and the evidence.1' Wo do not ,
think, however, that the city
court is getting enough revenue.
Five hundred liquor dealers?the '
minimun number credited to Char- \
leston?at ?100 a year would net
the city $50,000 a year and the .
city court only secured $4,15u in i
six months. Why not double the i
tines and tine double the number? 1

Closing Around Daring Convicts.
Sun Francisco, July 2S.?The
tight at Pilot Hill last mght be- ?
tween the convicts and their pur- ;
utters seems to have been a more *
serijus affair than at first report- J
ed. After they had looted a pio- t
vision store sit Pilot Hill tbev
were practically surrounded by s
the sheriffs of Sacramento and I
Placer counties, each commanding :
n (
a strong posve. All four horses |
on the convicts' wagon were shot |
and one of the criminals was kill > t
ed outright. Then the outlaws]
raised a white Hag and marched !
up the road with the guards and
others whom they had captured (
on each side of them. A general !
volley was not ordered, as it 1
might have killed several innocent f '
men. In this deliberate manner (
tho second escape was made.
The pursuing officers have been 1
instructed to shoot the convicts on I
i
sight and their death <>r capture 1
in the near future is expectod.
