''Nil," said the lawyer, "1 shan't
press your cluim against that
man. You can get someoDe else to
take the case, or you can withdraw
it, just as you please."
"Think thore isn't any money
in it!"
"There would probably be a
little money in it; but it would
come from the sale of the little
house the man occupies and calls
his 'Lome .' But 1 don't want to
meddle with the matter anyhow."
"Got frightened out of it, ehf"
"Not at till."
"I suppose the old fellow begged
hard to be let otT?"
"Well, yes, he did."
"And you caved in, likely?"
"Yes."
"What in creation did you do?"
"1 believe I shod a few tears."
"The old fellow begged you
hard, you sayf"
"No, 1 didn't say so, he didn't
speak a word to me.''
"Well, may 1 ask whom did he

Ho took to praying, did ho?"
"Not for my benefit in the least.
You see, I found the little house
easily enough, and knocked on the
outer door, which stood a jar, but
nobody heard me; so I steppo.l into
the little hall, and saw through
the crack of the door a cosy sitting-room,
and theie on the bed,
with tier silver head high on the
pillows, was an old lady, who
looked for all world just like my
mother did the last time I saw her
on earth. Well, I was on the
point of knocking ugain, when she
said, Come, father, now begiu; 1
am all ready.' Down on his knees
by her side went the old white

wife, 1 should judge; and I
couldn't have knocked then for
the life of me. Well, he began.
First ho reminded God that they
were still liis submissive children,
mother and he, and, no matter
what he saw lit to bring upon
them, they should not rebel
against his will. Ot course, it was
going to be hard for them to go
out homeless in their old age,
especially with poor mother so
sick and helpless; and oh,how different
it might have been if only
one of the hoy had beeu speared.
Then his voice kind o' broke, and
a thin, whito hand stole from un
dor tho coverlid, and moved softly
over his snowy hair. Then he
went 011 to repeat that nothing
could ever be so sharp again as
the parting with those three sons

separated! Hut at last he fell to
comforting himself with the fact
that the good Lord knew that it
was through no fault of his own
that mother and he wore threatened
with the loss of their dear little
home, which meant beggary
anil the almshouse?a pi ace they
prayed to be delivered from, if it
could be consistent with God's
will. And then ho ijuoted a multitude
of promises concerning the
safety of those who put their trust

most^thrilling plea to which I ever

demand justice."
Then tho lawyer continued,
more slowly than ever. "And?1
?believe I had ruther go to the
poorhouse myself tonight than to
stain my hands and heart with
the blood of such a persecution as
that."
"Little afraid to defeat tho old
man's prayer, ohf'
"Bless your soul, man, you
couldn't defeat that prayer. I
tell you he left it all subject to
the will of God; but he claimed
that we wore told to make known

iho pleading 1 over heard, that
moved me most Von see, 1 was
taught tiiat kind of thing myself 1

"1 wish," yaid the client un- I
eavily, 1 wish you hadn't told 1
me about the old man's prayer."

The lawyer ainiled. '
"My dear fellow," ho said '
"you are wrong again. It waa
intended for my eara and yours 1
too; and God Almighty intended 1
it. My old mother used to sing
about 'God moves in a mysterious
way,' 1 remember."
"Well, my mother used to sing '
it too," said the client, and he 11
twisted the claim papers in his
fingers. "You can call in the
morning, if you like, and tell
'mother' and him, the claim has
been met."
"In a mysterious way," added
the lawyer.

Keowee, that has withstood the
liigh waters for many years was
lifted from its foundations and J
carried far down the river.
Little river seems to have been
higher even than Keowee. In the
rapid rise a family of negroes,
four in number, were surrounded
and three of them drowned. The
father was saved by clinging to a
tree as he was tloating along.

The examinations for the award
of vacant scholarships in Wintbrop
College and for the admission of
new students will tie held at the
County Court House on Friday,
July 10th, at 9 a. m.
Applicants must not he less
than fifteen years of age.
