m
JohnstoD, April 13.?T his
morning about six miles from
here in Saluda county Mr. John
Shaver was shot and killed by
Rufus Dursl, a young white man.
It appears from the information
obtained up to this writing that
Durst wanted Shaver's son, who,
with bis father, was a tenant
working on shares on Durst'a _.
father's farm, to work in the lat- **
ter'a field. Shaver explained that ^
uia son naa 10 go away for a part
of the day. It seems that Durst
became infuriated. Hot words ^
passed and Durst pulled his pistol ^"
and Bred, killing old man Shaver,
whose age was about 70 years. ^
It is said Durst claims that the
re
victim made at him with a sprout- .
ci
ing ax. Another son of the de- ^
ceased, who was working nearby .
iu the field, hearing pistol jLctu
looked around in time to see his
w
father fall. There seems to have ^
been no eyewitnesses to the scene
before the firing. ^
