County Treasurers Meet anil Ask
for Better Siila ues.

Yesterday a number of county
troasumrs mot here in response to
a call from Treasurer Hough of
Kershaw county for tho purpose
of taking steps to secure the passage
of an act by tho general assembly
increasing the salaries allowed
the treasurers. Among
those who attended were Treasurer
Guy of Chester, Folk, of Bam
berg, Wylio of Fairfield, Smith
of Colleton, Laugford of Hamp
ton, Long of Ilorry, Copeland of
Laurens, Boiling of Williamsburg,

Barnwell.
Most of the absent treasurers
wrote letters of concurrence in the
purpose of tho meeting. Treasurer
Cauthen of Lancaster wrote
opposing the request.
After a full discussion a committee
consisting of Treasurer
Free of Barnwell, Wylio of FairHeld,
Hough of Kershaw and
Bartles of Union was appointed
to go before the legislative committees
in regard to the matter.
Subscription Opened for a Monu
moot to Editor Gonzales.

subscription lists were opened
to raise a fund for the erection of
a monument to N. G. Gonzales,
late editor of The State. One
thousand dollars was subscribed
during the morning and it is bolioved

Freezing People Hold Up Coal

nearly 500 men, women and boys
held up a Chicago and Northwest
em coal train and carried away
the contents of live cars before
they were dispersed by the police.

For three hours traffic was suspended
while the mob increased
to more than a thousand persons.
A riot cull was turned in and
order finally restored. Three
women and two men were arrested,

county to form a new county with
JitTorsou as the county seat The
people of that part of the county
together with those of east Lancaster
and northern Kershaw are
almost isolated from a county
seat; and are put to many inconveniences
about attending to court
and other matters that would necessarily
cause them to go to the
court house.
The distance from lellersou to
Chesterfield is 22 miles, from
there to Lancaster 27 and to Mon- !
roe. N. C , 25 miles.
The people of this community i
and adjacent sections in other
counties, aro put to inucli disadvantage
on account of the state
of affairs as it now exists.
Mr. H. E Evans, a capable
and energetic young man, is the
chairman of the committee in
charge of the matter. For the j
present the matter is being quiet- |
ly agitated.
Mr. Evans states that all the
necessary legal (pi ilitications cm
be easily secured: that the proposed
territory has the necessary
area population, etc., also that
there will bo plenty of area and
taxable property 1 fi to satisfy the
old counties. As to the county

the sceno after the explosion,
gathered at the bank and opened
tire on the robbers. The tiro was
returned, one of the robbeis on
guard shouting to the citizens that
they had come there to rob the
bank and intended to do it. Their
work finished, the robbers made a
dash into the darkness. Another
fusilade of bullets was exchanged
but nobody was hurt, tho robbers
finally getting away in a stolen

Tho men were clniged with tho
violation of section 5440 revised
statutes of tho United States relating
to conspiracy against tho
government, of section 5478 relating
to breaking into United
States postotliccs with force, and
of the act of congress of March 3,
1875, concerning embezzlement of
governmen money.
The commissioner decided that
the men should be bound over to
loo next term of the Unitid States
court to he held in Charleston
some tune in April. Bond was
required in the sum of $10,000

with robbing are those at
Montmorenei, Bateshurg, Knorec,
Harlsville, Cameron and Hein

from YYiilimon's pocket, when
they got into a sou tile and ho was
i trying to gel away, when Willi;
mon pulled the rope very violently
and the pistol was accidentally
discharged, after which he made
his escape Ho took the pistol
to keep from being shot as he at
tempted to get away.
The argument of counsel was
j brief, and so was the charge of
J Judge Purdy. Tho jury went
out shortly after 5 o'clock and
' did not return for more than an

WITHIN THE LIMITS OF
THE TOWN OF LANCASTER.
lie it orduined by the Mayor
and Aldermen of the Town of
Lancaster, in council assembled and
by the authority of same.
Skc. 1 That an annual tax of
One Dollar is hereby assessed and
levied against the owner of each
dog or bitch kept within the corporate
limits of said town to be
paid on or before Jany. 1st 1003,
and on or before Januaiy 1st of
each and every year thereafter.
That upon payment of said tax,
the owner of any dog or bitch
shall bo furnished by the Chief of
Police with a tag which shall be
immediately placed upon said dog
or bitch by being attached to a
collar.
Skc. 2. That any dog or bitch
found running at largo without
the tag proscribed in Section 1 of
this ordinance, shall be seized and
impounded by the olli jji-s of the
town and unless the said tax of
Ono Dollar, together with an additional
amount of twenty tive
