k Signed Statement
By Tillman,
Published Statements, He Claim?,

That HeJThought .(Jon
zales Was Armed.
Columbia, S. C., Jan. 10.?
Lieutenant Governor J if. 11
Tillman is taking things quietly
and calmly -in the county jail.
During the day ho had visitors
and three of his lawyers, Con
gressman George W. Croft, former*
Judge O. W. Buchanan, and
Mr. Coleman L. Blea>c, spent
most of tb(j day with their client.
Mr. P. H. Nelson, who is said
to bo in tho case, was consulted
during the day. Lieutenant Governor
Tillman is quartered in the
corridor room on the second floor
of the county jail. lie has a loom
to himself. This afternoon he
had'new furniture brought to the
O
room and is confortably fixed.
During the afternoon >two of his
counsel brought*n c?py*of a statement
which Colonel Tillman had
himself written in response to an
offer from a New York paper that
its columns*were open to him. It
1 - *
was uiso requested that/the statement
be Bent to lite Associated
Press, it is as follows.
"I thank you for your courtooua
and kind telegram. In view
of tho facts .that the dispatches
sent out from Columbia emanated
from the office of Tho State news
paper,iof which Mr. Gonzales was
editor, I'don't deem it'.necsssnn
to deny whntdias been sent froln
that quarter. When this?^unfortunate^
affair "is known to my
4d U* J
friends as-well as to tho people of
this country, .they will sea how
thoroughly I was justified in acting
as I did.
"The statements already published
in the papers are untrue
and[at the proper time, 1 will be
prepared to show this. Beyond
this I do not care to make any
further statement.
(Signed) ,4Jas. H. Till man "
The New York papers, with
whatever accounts they may have
published have not reached here
to be read, and the reports published
here at o?based on th* available
facts and evidence. The understanding
is that Colonel Tillnan'i
line of defense will bo that
he thought Mr. Genzales was
arned, that he had a weapon in
his coat pockot and thut he had
his hands in his coat pockets. He
isisaidito contend that he did not
know Mr. Gonzales was not armed.
Second, that when ho aimed
his pistol the second timo at Mr.
Gonzales, he did so expecting Mr.
Gonzales to defend himself and
that he lowered his weapon because
there#was so response and
?,? -< a.:-- w /i

said. Ho refutes the reiterated
statement of Mr. Gonzalez
that he said to him with a bullet
through him, and unarmed,
"Shoot again, you coward!''
Mr. Till man will ulso, it is un- i
derstood, contend that ho had not 1
met Mr. Gonzales. This is denied,
and it is said that Mr. Gon- ,
zales and Mr. Tillman were in
the Senate chamber and State capitol
together.
Lieutenant Governor Tillman, I
however, only makes the slate- ^
ment that appears over his signature.
The whole story, has, how- 1
ever, all been given and there is
now no need to repeat the details
of the awful alfair. That Mr.
Gonzales sent no message; that he
was quietly on his way to dinner;
that ho was alone; that he was.,
unarmed; that he said nothing to )
provoke hostilities, all seem admitted,
and that Lieutenant Governor
Till 111 a n met Gonzales
and promptly lircd into him is 1
equally true. What there was in
tbe Bind of the assailant is an- 1
ther question. !
Mrs. Till man and Mrs. Geo. i
D. Tillman are expected hert? tonight.
