Special to The State Laurens, Nov. 24.-This morn ' ing Magistrate Iludgons sent up j to court eight cases against that many negroes for gambling and j currying concealed weapon?. They were captured Saturday night by Sheriff Ducket, Deputy Power, Chief of Police Hughes and Oflicers Bag.veil and Arnold. They were half a mile beyond the city limits and were engaged in a O O game when the ollicers pounced up in them. Most of thtni have given bond. Mr. B. I'ntil further notice I will he in my of. free every Saturday and tirst Monday in each month unless otherwise stated through the county papers. With bc.-t wishes and highest regards to all, 1 am Yours for Education, A. C. Kowki.l, Co. Supt. ( f Education. ?The whole of the business portion < f the to*? n of Wi linyton, in ,-\ .b: \ille county, was burned <1 y morning at '1 o'clock. 1 iie origin < f the tiro is not known, but it i> . upposcd to have been the work of incendia ries. 111 me, iiv eiccimg me lo Uio ollice the second time. It is with new zeal and energy that 1 again assume the great responsibility of being placed at the head of the educational interest of the county. It is my purpose to make the next two years the most progressive and prosperous so far as the educational interests are concerned, that has ever been known, in the history of Lancastor County, and to make asucccss in this great work, I must have the hearty co operation of patrons, trustees and teachers, wot king us a unit peacefully and harmoniously. In some districts there arc too tunny schools. When wc consider the amount of the funds which their enrollment brings in such schools, we can very readily sec the need of consolidation. It would iiu reuse the funds, make longer terms, insure better teach or- and create a greater interest iu every particular, thereby ius triug better attendance, and accomplisl ing greater and more satisfitdory work in our schools. i hope to oon see the districts that have two or more small schools, uniting their interest and money iu one good lirst-class * school. There is an inclination y on the part of a great many pco . pie to want the school-house at their door, and they will not help in building up a school unless it is placed just to suit them. This should not l>e the case as it is impossible for all to be situated just as they would like, and it therefore becomes necessary that there be sacrifices made in this respect as well as in many other particulars. Trustees should visit their schools often, and encourage both teacher and pupils to greater work; and should be sure when they select a teacher, that they lmve one of the best. Teachers should realize their duty as a teacher?know that teaching is calling and not a mere P money-making profession as some look upon it. lb pils should be aware of the fact, that the teacher cannot help them any unless they are willing to help themselves, and 1 hope to see greater interest taken on the part of the pupils than over before. Parlies having business in my ollicc will pleux' take note of the fact, that I will not be in my office on Saturday l.'illi of December next as 1 will meet with the Educational Association at Heath Secret Marriage ends In Tragedy Duston Sarvis Ivil's iliinsolf and Wounds I lis Wife in Mufion County.
