Property Owners' Iicague has been formed in Chicago for the purpose of endeavoring to secure legislation which will pro vide that burglars and highwaymen shall be whipped at the post, in addition to being sentenced to jail terms. The whipping post has been abolished in almost every part ot the United States on the ground that it is a relic of barbarism. In Delaware they cling to the whipping post for wife beaters and certain petty criminals, and claim that the influence of the flogging is decidedly good. ? A most unusual surgical opera* tioii was performed here yesterday, when Hurtsell Uoe, an eight* year-old boy, was provided with a brand new nair c.f ears. The little fellow was born without eats, I?ut cotihl hear till light, as the interior parts were present as in any. human, but there was nothing out of the skull to indicate that he would ever have ears. Ilis parents took him to many hospitals and till the physicians refused to undertake the operation. Finally local physicians became interested in the case and after obtaining the parents' consent they performed what is known as the plastic operation, and in two hours the little fellow was the possessor of a presentable pair of ears. l>.?y Dies as iho Remit of a Mock Hanging. Oxford, Miss., Oct. 29.?Emmanuel Crump, an 18 year eld negro boy \\h had witnessed the recent hanging of Malhisand Los ter here, secured a plow line and hung it over a tree limb and arranged a noose for a mock hanging of himself. While a negro farmer living near Wynne, Ark.,' was absent from home Wednesday, a negro brute entered his homo and murdered his three daughters, after criminally assaulting one of them. There is no more dospicablo act in the entire catalogue of crime than the wilful manning of a domestic animal. There was a crime of this sort committed atAusonville Sunday night that makes one feel that no punishment would l)o too severe for the dastard who committed it, if he can bo caught. Somo liend entered the stable of lie v. G. O. \Yil~ hoit at that place, at the time mentioned above, and stole his lino 2-year-old colt. The colt was led through the pasture a distance (Tf about 200 yards when the fence was let down to permit of its being taken in to the road. At this point there was evidence of a severe struggle, indicating that the colt refused to loave tho pasture, and that the tluef made desperate efforts to force it to do so. It is supposed tho mat* be en mo enraged at the colt's obstinacy and drew his knife and cut a gash, to the bone, running from the upper part of the shoulder to the shoulder Made of tho animal. The gush is 15 inches long. The wound was sowed up and it is hoped the colt will recover. South Carolina Presbyterians. In view of the recent assemb ling of the synod of South Carolina, the following statistics will he of interest: Tho#Prcsby torian church in this State comprises in all 130 ministers and 20,014 members. There are 272 organized Presbyterian churches in the State. They average 75 communing members to each churcti. There are 27 young men in training for tho ministry in the . synod. During tho vonr ending Murch H ' C? 31, 1902, the synod of South Carolina raised for church purposes $145,339, or an average of $704 for each member. They gave to foreign missions $11,183, an average of 54 cents per member. They gave for homo missions ] $8,079, an average of 42 cents, j To other benevolent causes they gave $17,782, an average of 80 cents per member. Tho average salary paid all over the synod is $*742 to each pastor. In salaries to ministers the church pays $70,995. In current j congregational expenses, besides the ministers' salaries, $35,010. i Tho President's Birthday. Freeman, former Government storekeeper, was tried yesterday in the United States Court on the charge of murdering Holland Durham.
