For some time rumors affecting
the character of Rev. Burr
Harris, former \ as*tor of the
North Rock llill Circuit, now in
Boxcman, Montana, have been
whispered in this community ami
elsewhere in the State, but Rev.
S. lb Harper, former pastor of
the Rock llill Laurel Street
Church, also in Bo/.enian, having
boen informed of these rumors,
has written a letter to Presiding
Klder H. 11. Browne at Orangeburg,
in which he declares that
there is absolutely nothing in the
reports. au<l says further:
"It was the most outrageous
case of attempted blackmail I over
heard of. It is a long storv and

but please say to all who ask
about it that Barr is the same
faithful and consecrated man he
has always been. He is doing

Rock Hill llorald.
Bishop 1. C. Clinton has returned
home from holding the
37th annual se-sion of the Tennessee
conference of the A. M. K.
Zion Church of America which
convened at llarriuian, Tenn.,
the 16th inst. The Report of the
Conference in the .Journal and
Tribune of Knoxvillc, Tenn.,
says: ''This conference is presided
over by lit. Rev. 1. ( . Clinton,
D. IX, and the membership
is composed of some of the most
intelligent negroes of the state.

The bishop delivered his Episcopal

thought and logic and tilled the
members with burning zeal and a
determination to attain to grander
fields? of accomplishment.
The A. -M. IC. Zion church is
over one hundred and six years
old and has a membership of nearly
six hundred thou-and. The
church has several connectional
schools from the lower grades to
the college, its own publication
house and booa room operated
entirely by the members of the;

A Tax Decision.
Recently the auditor of Sumter
wrote the comptroller general
stating the e iso of n man in that
county who he'd that lie did not
have to return a stock of goods
which he had just bought from
a wholesale house in this state on
credit, he having bought the
goods since .January. The ease
was referred to the attorney g"neral,
who says that the taxes mind
be paid whether the goods were
bought on credit or not. The
law provides that when a party
moves from one county to another
he should get a certificate
from the treasurer that the taxes
bad been paid. This prevents
