SATL'RI)A\ OCTOBER 11, 1902." ?A problem deserving the most serious thought is the tendency on the part of a class of farmers to rush to town in order to obtain the advantage of certain benefits. Usually the benefits they seek are bettor school advantages and society for their children. At least this is the ex plauatioo they give when information is sought, and it points to the fact that the schools in the country are not up to the standard they ought to be. Why do not these people who are seeking better schools for their children, and who believe that increased educational training promotes other* beneficial re* suits, instead of going to town to obtain these benefits, institute the needed reforms right in their own communities! Certainly their presence and help is needed in just such places because of the very fact that they have an appreciation of the things that make life the more worth 'iving. With one class of farmers leaving the country to obtain the benefits they claim to bo seeking, and another class leaving to get to the mills, where, they claim, they can make a better living, it is a question of what is to become or tne farming interests if the moving away from the farm continues. It is a pauperizing policy to build up the towns at the expense of the country. Let both grow together.?Kershaw Era. Farmer's National Congress. George I Flanders, of Albany, N. Y., is the presiding officer, and John M. Stahl, of Chicago, the secretary 1 of tbe congress. Owing to the large attendance of regularly accredited delegates it was found 1 necessary to exclude the general 1 public from today's opening sessions, which were devoted to ad- 1 dresses of welcome and reponses 1 and the work of organizing the < congress. The sessions of the congress are to continue three days, during ^ which time there will he discussions on many topics of a national and international character. The Receipts for One Day in Ne\ York Reach $9,750,000. New York, Oct. 7.?There wa a rush to pay city taxes on th first day of collection which brok the record in the amount of inone' paid aud of the number of per sons in line. The estimate of receipts for the day reached $9, 750,000. When the windows were open ed more than 2,000 property ow Ders were in line. Dickson and others are the corporators, i On its face this seems a queer kind of a combination of purpose; in reality it is a clever scheme to . rid a smalt community perhaps of f an objectionable distillery. The 9 dispensary law provides that in . the country no distillery or dis) ponsary shall be located within i three miles of a church or school f house. The people of Antioch ) evidently had no church, but they i did have the distillery, and in j their community the church per1 haps became a real necessity.? The State. A Very Mysterious Explosion. j Hock Hill, Oct. 8.?At 1.30 o'clook this morning the magazine < at the Catawba Power company's 1 plant on the river, five miles above here, exploded. There I were stored therein ten kegs of : powder and several boxes of dy namite. The explosion was terrific, the windows at Wintbrop college rattling frr rait and persons there and in the other en<' of the city, six and one-half miles from the scene being awakened as by an earthquake.
