and West in Congress, when
speaking of the head of the Presidential
ticket for 1904, now
mention more frequently than
any others the names of Richard
Olney of Massachusetts and Edward
M. Shepard of New York.
It is said hy men who ought to
be able to speak knowingly on
the subject that Mr Bryan would
be delighted with the nomination
of either of these men, though
Deither ever has professed to ho a
free silver man.
Apparently Mr. Bryan's friends
are contented to put a black mark
agaiust the uames of certain men
who occupy a pecular position in
the party, and will bo satisfied
with the nominatii n of any good
man not personally on their black*
list. It is manifest, however,
that among the class of men who
controlled the convention in 1900
and who now dominate the Dem
ocratic national comntittee, Mr.
Olney and Mr. Shepard are prime
favorites.
The sentiment commonly expressed

and 19C0 ore presented for consideration
in 1904, Democrats
acknowledge those platforms will
have to be repeated or repudiated,

in Congress to thresh over old
straw, after the grain is all gone, (

threshing was not properly done.
Practically all Democrats in official
position agree to the proposi- \

in the true spirit of Democracy,
holding that a platform is not a <
declaration of cardinal principles, 1
but i9 the application of such prin- <
eiples to tbe issues raised by existing
conditions. Tho conten
tion of the most radical Bryan
men is not for the perpetuation of
old issues, but for the application '
to the issues of the hour of the *
ame cardinal principles which '
were applied in 1806 and 1900 to *
tbe issues of that time.

Held for Murder

Tifton, Ua , Aug. -25.? Mack
Pi.wlk, brother of Hilluian Puulk,
he prominent farmer who was
murdered in the road near here
yesterday, was arrested today on
the charge of being the slayer.
He has been committed without
bail. Officers are looking for
John Walker, a young white man,
who is suspected of being an acees^
'i v to the murder.
A witness j ppcared before the
coroner's piry and testified that
he passed Hillman and Mack Paulk
about a mile from Tifton. They
were ruling in Mack's buggy and
leading Hillman's horse. That
was the lust seen of Hillman alire.
An examination of the body
showed signs of a severe struggle.

as if he had been bitten. The
body was punctured by four bullet
holes, three of which had ap
parently been fired after he had

of a stone and granite dry dock -J
for the new naval station at Charleston,
S. C. Specifications for
the work will be sent out in a few '
days, and tho bids are to be opened
at the navy department.on
October 11. The dry dock structure
proper and the entrance to
the same are to built of concrete
facing and coping, with u contin
uous water proof course of felt
laid iti asphalt, unless during the
progress of tho work it is found
preferable to use piles under the
entire bottom of the dry dock
proper and entrance. The dimensions
of tho dock are (>43x144
in length and breadth, with a
greatest depth of 42 feet. The
limit of the cost for the entire
work, including u pumping plant
and other apparatus, is $1'200,000.
The amount of appropriation
available for the work under
the specifications about to bo issued
$850,000.
