Drowned His Four Children.
Salinn, Kan., Aug. 19.?Joseph
Anderson, a farmer living east of
Salina, in a lit of despondenqy today,
drown his four children,
three girls and a boy, in a cistern,
and then shot himself with a revolver.
Andcrsou is still alive, but will
probably die. Financial matters
had affected his mind. The crime
was committed during the absence
of the mother. The oldest child
was G years and the youngest a
baby of four months. Anderson
loft a note on a table notifying
the mother that the children could
be found in the cistern.

Road master Fred Stovers of Stevers,
Vs., was shot sud killed
and Ji 11 Mitchell, a negro porter,
was dangerously wounded io a
tight with disorderly negroes on a
southbound Seaboard Air Line
train near Middlehnrg this Afternoon.
The negroes had taken seats in
the coach reserved for whites.
Conductor Clements ordered them
to the coach for negroes. The I
negroes protested hut obeyed the
order. When in the <4juii crow"
coach ono of tlio negroes, named
doe O?lo, struck at the conductor.
Headmaster Stovers came to the
conductor's rescue. The negro
pulled a pistol and Stovers Jaspod
him around the hotly, hut the no
gro twisted his unit around, and
getting his | istol against Steves'
head, shot him, Stevers falling
dead on the coach tloor. Mitchell
the poller rushid towards Oole as
he p >ii ted tne pistol at Conductor
Clements and was shot in the
abdomen.
Passengers captured three of
the participants and two jumped
from the train, escaping to the
woods. llloodTtounds have been
sent from Weldon to chase them
down.
The dead body of Stevers was
put off at Henderson and Jim
Mithcll, the colored porter, was
brought to Raleigh where an operation
was performed on bmi to*
night. The physicians fear ho
will die.
Requests for the use of the
militiary have been made. There
