The senator has more state pride than to wish such a thing. Jim Tillman was never a Reformer, anyhow, lie was a Conservative in the Sheppard and Orr campaign, when Ben Tillman helped Talbert heat Jim's father for con gress. There is a great deal of unierence ooiween a lieu nilmanite ami a Jim Tillmanite. The State board of education ia out in a strong letter in defense of Mr. McMuhan in the text book adoption matter. It cites that the board was appointed by the governor without regard to Mr. McMahan's preference: that each liook was adopted by a majority of the members present, that Mr. McMahan has dono his whole duty in enforcing the adoption, that no otlu radoptions can be made till 190fi, and thai it is due to Mr. McMahan's efforts that South Carolina schools now get their books at the lowest prices. This letter of the State board ought to satisfy every thinking person that Mr. McMahan was in no wise responsible for the adoption being made, and that since the adoption had to be made that he spared no pains to seen: e the lowest price on all books adopted. Severe Storm at Greenville. Greenville. S. C., Aug. 21.? The heaviest storm in years passed over Greenville this afternoon, damaging much property. A number of houses were blown down west of the city and trees torn up by the roots. One residence within the city was completely demolished, but no loss of life has been reported. - The Confederate monument at Winnsboro will lie unveiled ou next Wednesday, Judge A. C. Wilie Jones Bets Talbert a Silk Hat. Greenville Daily News. Columbia, S. C.. Aug. 10.? Colonel Talbert, candidate for governor, having charged Chairman Jones of violating the rules of the Democratic party in allowing individual candidates to re ceive tickets for distribution, the 1 latter sent the following message D C to the former today: 1 "Columbia, S. The State Campaigners ; Their F.ngngeiuent With u ] liig Night Meeting at Columbia. J Special to The Daily Mews Columbia, S. C., Aug. ill.? 1 The State campaign closed here today. Nothing sensational yet. Walker strongly initnated that there was a deal between Derhain and .tones and that Derham was to be .1 ones' chief clerk if elected. Jones said ho was glad Derhain supported him and was glad of the support of any one. There were no spats between any of the candidates. Ansel was the first speaker tonight and ho made a decided impression and aroused great enthusiasm. He seomed delighted with his reception. There were fully 1,500 in the audience, including many ladies. The candidates presented J. E. Norincnt with a handsome loving cup in testimony of his fairness as campaign correspondent. Dr. Timmerii an gave some facts on the increasing state debt which is of a floating character. J as. Tillman was received with a great outbreak of appluuse and suggested that thee was a time when a Tillurin would not have received an ovation. Many encouraging cries were given him. He rapped once or twice at The State, not severely at the outset. Farewell Performance of the Senatorial Section. Special to the Daily News. Winnsboro, S. C., Aug. 21.? The last meeting of the Senatorial campaign party was held here today. It was the scene of sermra - a tion and last long farewell of the "Big Six" who have fought, hied and died together save one on whom tho people will bestow the gift of Senatorial life for the next six yeafs. Hope burns brightly in the breast of each. "We have met the people and they are ours," is the universal cry. Tho meeting today was a mixturo of all that have preceded it and manfully did they light. Records, Philppines, business policies, lawyers, farmers, bomb proofs, firing lines, nut grass roots, pumpkin seeds, bulletins, appropriations, and tariff measures were so mixed that it reminded one of tho Irishman who one night slept with a "naygure," as he called him when he awoke next morning and found himself painted black he could not for the life of him tell which was himself and which was tho "naygure." Col. Elliott made his usual speech. When Latimer's turn came he, like the goat he loves to tell about, bowed himself up and showed fight. He jumped on the whole crowd of lawyers in general and made special targets of Evans and Johnstone. He is a plain, practical farmer and all tho lawyers have been jumping on him, be said.
