Desk Sergeant Heary Joy have
returned from Campbell county
where they went to help hunt
down the assailants of Wi'liam ?
DeLap, near LaCollette Sunday
night. They left here Monday
morning with ''Queen" and
"Jude," two of Coleman's bloodhounds
They report a very successful
run. They were on the I
scone by 10 o'clock and struck a i
trail in a few moments. The i
scene of the attempted uiurdor and <
robbery is just outside the corpor '
ation of LaFollette. The officers |
examined the ground and found
where the scuffle took place. A 1
few steps away was found the t
empty pocket book of the wounded i
man. At this spot the dogs struck '
the trail, and were soon yelping i
away on the tracks of the suppos- i
ed perpetrators of one of the most 1
bold and cowudly crimes in the *
history ef the county.
"In aboyt two miles," says 1
Officer Coleman, "we came to a '
house where a prominent .nail liv- 1
ed. Here the dogs dumbfounded '
the crowd which wus following us
by trailing up into tha porch. The *
man who lived in this house was *
a prominent Odd Follow, but the 1
dogs do not have to contend with c
the character of men and their 1
keen scent is no respeclor of per- *
sons. Like some contagious dis- (
euse thoy steal upon their victim,

that this must be a mistake. The 8
dogs seemed to think their duty 1

Heavy Rains In Texas.
Western Part ot State Inundated
by Cloudburst.
Dallas, Tex., July 25.-?The
heavy rainfall in west Texas which
is characterized as the worst ever
known continued today, and at
Stephensvillo three lives were lost
in a rushing torrent of water.
Several houses were surrondod by
mc tioou unci li. Whitley, in attempting
to rescue his family, was
drowned with his little daughters.
Later iu the day Assistant County
Attorney Gardner was drowned in
an attempt to rescue the same family.
One of the bodies has been
recovered.
Cloud burst was followed by
cloud burst in West Texas, and
lakes aud seas of water have inundated
the country, causing great
loss to the railroads and interrupting
traffic aud travel. The worst
feature is that the "rain continues
to descend in torrents as far cast
as Weatherford. The downpour
is the heaviest over n corded in

West Texas, which is subject to
protracted droughts that are generally
broken by heavy rains, which
gorge the canons The water 111J
the Pecos valley country is felt
more than ever known.
Several washouts have occurred
on the joint tracks of the Texas
Pacific and Soulhtrn Pacific railways
between Sierra lilanca and
El Paso, and south of Sierra Blanca
the Southern Pacific has sulfered.
It is doubtful it" the Peeos
valley load can be put in condition
to move trains under ten days or
two wct'KSj oven should the rain
cease now. Railr. ad officials report
that as fast as track has been
washed away or bridges destroyed
they have been replaced only to
be again destroyed by the swirling
waters. There has been no
through travel since Tuesday.
At San Martine, Toy ah, Pecos,
Odessa and other places washouts
have occurred and the country is
under water in all directions.
Every exertion is being put
forth to repair the damage and
restore normal conditions, hut until?the
rain ceases nothing permanent
can be accomplished.
Sumnierville Has Another Big
Fire.

Charleston, July 20.--Fire destroyed
one of tho leading blocks in
Sunimei'Yille this morning, burning
11 stores and two dwellings.

The same block was dostroyed by
tiro ten years ago, and the present
conflagration follows closely the
tire which wiped out another part
of the business section of the little
city about six months ago.
The tiro broke out this morning
about o'clock in the rear of
Tuppor's pharmacy, on Central
avenue. The alarm was sounded

Jeffcoat, the horse thiof and
murderer, after being chased by
the sheriffs of three counties, is
still at large.
Sheriff < hven Alderman, with
his posse ot 10 men, returned to
Aiken lato last night after a fruitless
expedition in search of the
desperado in the neighborhood of
Wagener, in this county. After
n thorough search the party failed
to tind Jeffcoat's trail and were
compelled to return without their
man.
It seemed to bo the prevailing
imprcssiou among tho members of
the posse that Jeffeoat crossed tho
Edisto river after killing Deputy
Sheriff Curtis All on Tuesday and
that he i< now in Georgia.
lie has been reported as having
been seen at MeBean, Ga., Thursday
evening, and tho Georgia
authorities are now on tho watch
for tho outlaw. JelTcoat, ulias
Charley Johnson, is now thrice a
murderer and rewards aggregating
$1,000 are offered for his
capture.

Childen Killed on Trestle Near
Monroe.
i Charlotte Observer, 27th.
A* Seaboard Air Lino freight
train, running from llamlet to
Monroe, yesterday afternoon, killed
two little negro girls and fatally
inju rc<^ another small colored
girl. The accident occurred
on the trestle over Richardson's
creek, two miles east of Monroe.
The trcatlo is about 300 feet
long aud varies in height from 10
to 50 feet. Five littlo girls were
near the western end of the structure
when tho train?No. 9.?approached.
Tho engineer did everything
possible to stop his engine and the
little girls ran rapidly for safety,
but only two of tliem escaped. A
10-year-old daughter of Isliam
Cousart and tho daughter of a
negroe named Nelson were struck,
hurled from the trestle and almost
instantly killed, and the daughter
of Eli Forest was thrown from
the trestle and injured so badly
that her recovery is not expected.
