Shot by a Constable.
A Mill Operative Killed as a Re
salt of a General How.

Chester, .lone MO. ?Will Hodgepath
shot and killed Sidney
Lloyd here this afternoon about
4 o'clock. Both are young white
men. Hedgopath is chief constabio
at Eureka mill village. Lloyd
was an operative in the mill and
was only 28 years of ago. It is
reported a big row was on in
which one or two women arc interested.
Hedgepath got Lloyd
on the run and chased him nearly
a mile, killing him near Senator
Glenn's home, over in East Chester.
Three shots were tired, two
taking effect in the head and one
in the left hand. Lloyd was shot
while running, which would make
it appear that he was fleeing from
justice and that the constable was
justified in tho killing. Another
report, however, says the constable
was in the mix-up and was an
gry and shot JLloyd in the back.
There is all kind of talk going the
rounds, hut the fact will bo
brought out tomorrow morning at
the coroner's inquest. Undertaker
Joseph Walker has taken Lloyd's
body in charge. Constable Hedgepath
is in the hands of the sheriff.

The building did not give way and
fall, hut was left slightiy leaning 1
in the direction the wind blew.
The flashes of lightning were very '
vivid and the incessant roaring of 1
thunder and loud detonations were '
terrifying." '

this to say: I know you all like
a promising man -of some kind,
Ixit I am not g?ing to make you
any promises 1 cannot fulhl, just
to get you to swallow me down,
clothes and all. This road cp cation
is un interesting problem. It
is not only engaging the attention
of statesmen, hut even perplexing
tlieoninds of candidates forCounty
Supervisor?in just how to keep
in the road that will get them the
most votes. !f elected, I will
take advantage of every means in
my power to improve the public
roads of the County, doing the
very best I can to have the overseers
put in as many days as may
be neces-iurv to accomplish this
purpose.
And futlierniorc, I propose to
agnate and keep up agitation on
this subject until we see'some
definite movement ln?the direction
of good roads. To do this, we
need, not only individual influence
but organized effort. This is an
uge of organization, und any business
tbat ignores it, or fails to
avail itself of its advantages will,
and must suffer from sucb neglect.
We need a County Koads'Improvement
Association. Every
man knows nnd appreciates tbe
difference between individual influence
and crgauized influence?
tbe voice of one and the voice of
many.
Mr. Hoik says something about
the road law, its defectiveness, 1
believe. There may be some objectional
features in the luw, but
we can nevm* eradicate the wrong
or incorpora'e iho right until our
people taken deeper interest in
the matter.
Good county roads are not only
desirable, but are absolutely necessary
to the growth and devel
opment of any community, and
just now, the influences which
arc f>eing brought to bear to conO

realize that the public demand is
for improved means of communication.

senatorial campaign again open*d
up in the opera house here today.
The weather wan exceedingly j
warm. The crowd was again at j
tentive and intelligent about 2.">0
being present. Some of Marion's
fair daughters graced the
occasion with their presence.
Hon. C. A. Woods, county
chair man, presided and made some
very complimentary remarks concerning
the groat intelligence of j
the candidates. i
Col. Elliott made a hit by turning
a joke to his own advantage. lie
says his claim, as shown by
Johnstone, is the on'y one which
has any ground under it. Colonel
Elliott is showing up well.
The candidates thrashed over
the same old straw. Evans again |
received a bunch of beautiful
flowors.
The candidates again spoke well ,
and Evans and Latimer had a
squally time. Latimer in the
course of his speech, said no man
could put bis band on any point in
bis career where he had not been ,
faithful to the interests of the people.
Evaus accepted the challenge
and read a letter written by Dr. J.
William Stokes, in which Stokes
charged Latimer with distributing
free passes among members of
Congress and with seeding bis
farm with seed from Washington
at the expense of the government
and with tending him (Stokes) an
annual pass over the Great Trunk
Lino railroad which he returned..
Latimer replied that Stokes
was a candidate for the*. United
States senate when he wrote that
letter. Latimer says he got the
railroad company to give free
transportation to a party from
congress including Republican
leaders to Due West to heur Bryan's
speech, also to a party to attend
tho exposition. Lattlefield,
a prominent Republican,
who favored the Crunipacker bill <
before this visit, worked against i
it after his return to Washington, i
tho secretary of agriculture want' <
ed to make experiments with
grasses, and Latimer.said hefurn- I
ished the land, the manuro and ]
tne labor, aad the secretary furnished
the seed for the, experiments. ' i
The seed raised on his farm was I

throughout the country. He j
denied that he ever sent a pass to :
Dr. Stokes and says he can tell|t
the truth as well as anybody 1
sine. A great deal of feeling was
displayed on both sides, and so 1
closed the incident for this time.
