Reports have hccji teeoived
from Batcsville slating that tremendous
damage was done by the
storm which passed nlui r; the edge
of tins c ir.nty Saturday utiornnou
about 5 o'clock.
In many places cotton is left in
the field stripped of every leaf; in
tho forests, through a wido stretch
of country, all of the valuable
timbers are destroyed. The trees
being scattered in every direction,
indicating that tho wind took the
form of a cyclone.

was unroofed, somo of tho tin be?
ing rolled up and thrown sixty
yards from the building. A large
barn belonging to Frank Johnston
was completely demolished, as
was also a barn on tho Cashvillo
place. All of tho outbuildings at
Y. G. Carlton's place were destroyed
and the dwelling of Willie
Phillips was blown down. The
family were in tho house at the
time and almost miraculously
escaped. Mr. Phillips was slightly
injured.
The school building and chapel
at Crescent was demolished. Tho
course of tho storm as far as reported
was about seven milles,
starting near Polham cotton mills
and extending as far as Cross
Anchor. Many places show such
injury to the crop on account of
hail that they will have to be replanted.
Corn is literally torn
into shreds.

Albs .Ja..e Toppan, who was yesterday
declared insane, has confessed
that she has killed during
her career as a professional nurse
no less than 31 human beings.
This statement was made to Judge
Krvd M. Bixby of Brockton, senior
counsel tit the trial ut Barn?
stable yesterday, when Miss Toppin
was found not guilty by reason
of insanity on the charge of
murdering Miss Mary D. Gibbs.
Judge Bixby said also that Miss
Toppan had admitted that she had
set fires andcommittcd other serious
acts. She said she could not
help committing the crimes. She
argued, moreover, that she was
not insauo. She said she knew
she was doing wrong when she

administeredpoison to her victims,
and she asked Judge Bixby how,
under such circumstances, the

Morphine was Miss Toppan's
agency for administering death.
Many of her victims were unsuspecting
and most intimate friends;
others were the patients of reputable
physicians who employed
her on account of her ability us a
nurse. Miss Toppan was so expert.

was able to escape detection for
years. In the detailed story as

did not enumerate her many victims.

Davis, all of whom died at Calumet
last summer.

summer for these three murders,
the State electing to try her on
the Uibbs count yesterday.
Miss Toppan was taken to the
Taunton insane hospital today to
begin her life sentence.
The ease tried yesterday rested
on the testimony of alienists, who
do not only pronounce Jane Top]>
a to be insane, but to be a degenerate.
They said her impulses
irresistbly compelled her to
murder her patients 19 order that
she might enjoy the sight of their
struggles. They told of her con
fession of killing Mrs. Gibbs by
administering morphine and atrophine,
hiding the effects of the
former by the use of the latter.
To her senior counsel, Judge
