growing crops and damaged fruit
trees to a considerable extent. The
most serious damage was in the
vicinity of Gantt, midway botween
hero and Piedmont, wbcro cotton
and corn wore blown down by the
furious wind, and in some instant

The electrical display during the
storm was quite unusal, tho.light,
ning flashes being very frequent
and dangerous, as the reports
show that trees wero struck here
and there. At the residence of
Mr. J. A. Davenport, not far from
the city limits on the Augusta
road, a bolt of lightning went
threught the kitchen and thence
into an adjoining room, from
which it ascended through tho
i oof, but did not set fire to the
building. Mr. Davenport's little
daughter was in tho kitchen and
she was struck by tho lightning,
which ran around her leg and tore
her foot for several inches, but
fortunately she was not greatly
injured. Her presence of mind
was remarkable, as she called ono
of tho neighbors to their assistance
before realizing that she was at

our town, who has been suffering
intensely for the past three months
with gangrene in the left foot and
log, underwent an operation yesterday
afternoon and is extremly
cheerful this morning. Dr. O B
Mayer, a surgeon of Newberry,
assisted by Drs. Kirksey and
Gunterof this town, perforuriedthe
operation. The member amputated
was perfectly dead almost to the
knee. The patient, although now
in his 84th year, rallied from the
effects of anesthetics in three minrttcs
after the chloroform was removed,
and holding up the
"stum))" laughingly romarked:
"Now I'm well fixed; two legs
and only one fc "

afternoon news was received
hero that the house on Mr. M. H.
Evans' place, several miles from
towu, had been do9troyed by tire.
Upon investigation it was found
that Mr. Butler Kinard, the only
occupant, had been burned up in
the house. Several gentlemen
from town went out with the coroner
bi|t your correspondent has
been unable to learn the verdict
of the jury. Rumors are afloat to
the effect that the old man was
robbed and murdered and the
house burned. Conflicting stories
were told by the hands on the
place about the time the tire occurred.
