uiuko a red hot speech to the student
cor ps"y ester day, to which they
took exception and manifested
their displeasure in a most effect
ive manner. Ho scored the students
for their insubordination on
a ivuuci occasion, nut condemned
very roundly the suspension of
young Thornwell, saying quite
ugly thiugs about the majority of
the faculty in affixing such a severe
punishment for a trivial off
ence, by which they branded him
with the word "thief" across his
forehead. Tillman's defence of
President Hartzog was very vigorous
and outspoken, and he charged
the students with ungentle*
manly conduct towards the president,
which caused them at once
to begin shuffling their feet en the
floor as an indication of their dissent
from bis remarks upon their
conduct. One of the boys said that
this meant to express their
"contempt for Tillman, and was
equivalent to his being hissed.
The cadots wore not under military
control at the time, or else
numerous arrests would have ensued,
but they had been requested
to assemble in the chapel and fsit
that they were insulted by the remarks
of Senator ^Tillman. The,
lack of discipline in the last few j
days has caused much disorder j
among the cudels, and some of j
them were under the iuflunce of
liquor at night, when they would
carouse at their pleusuie in the
.barracks. This is the testimony of
boys who were not engaging in
disorderly conduct, and some of
them leit the college this morning
who expected to stay longe r, but
they wished to avoid further annoyance
from drunken boys at
ni"ht, who would visit their rooms

after midnight and make hideous
noises in the hallways in order to |
prevent others from sleeping. One
of the cadets stud that Tillman called
them "brutes'' when tno demonstration
was made as an offset
to his remarks.
