instance of Senator Tillman, Senator
Hale, chairman of the naval
committee, today offered an
amendmont to the naval appropriation
bill which was adopted
appropriating $057,300 to provide
for the construction of buildings at
the Charleston-saw vard.
Because it was felt Charleston
bad not kept her contract with the
government, .the appropriation j
was omitted btv the house. It means
much for Charleston that Urn work
is not nbandonod.
Struck By Lightning.

Rowesville, June 9.? During an
electric storm yesterday evening
the barn and stable of Mr. \V. L.
Wolfo was struck by lightning
and burned. He lost a considerable
amount of oats and pea viae buy.
No insurance.
Mistrial in The Arson Case.

Florence, Juno 'J.?A mistrial
has been ordered in the Swith and
Dennis arson case.
A few minutes before midu ight
last night Judge Purdy called the
jury from their room. For over
four hours these weary men had
debated the questions of the defendants1
guilt or innocence, but
could come to no agreement. It
is understood the jury stood 1 L
for acquittal, 1 for conicvtion.
Strange and Fatal Malady Attacks

Florence, June 0. ? The family
of Mr. J. F. Mathews of Lynch
township has been stricken with a
peculiar malady. One of the
children waatuken sick last Monday
and died tho following day.
Four more of the children, one
boy and three girls, havo been
stricken down and aro very low.
Dr. W. S. Lynch is giving them
his best attention.
Five Burned to Dsath in 11 Saratoga
Fire
Saratoga, N. Y, .June 0. ? Fire
early today destroyed the Arcade
and Citizens National bank block
and the Shackelford building and
caused a loss of five lives. The
property loss is estimated at
$300,000, with insurance of $220,000.
Thanksgiving services for peace
were held throughout England
Sunday, and tho royal family
attended church.
Governor Davis of Arkansas,
who was recently expelled from
the Baptist church io Little Itock,
has connected himself, on invitation,
with the Baptist church in
Kussellville.

a young white woman, a denizen
of the tenderloin district, suicided
at her home lalo last night from
the effects of an evor dose of
morphine. The deceased was

native of this county. She had
been living in his city for the past

volcanic outburst from Mont Pelee
today resulted in the formation
of a heavy cloud similar to
that of May 20 last, though it was
not so dense. No stones fell and
when the cloud had spread over
Fort de Frcnce half an hour later
there was no panic here
It is noticed at eort de Frrnce
that the volcanic outbursts coincide
with the changes of the moon.

A hen setting under
the chimney was killed and her
brood of chickens injured. Isaac's
wife and daughter wore silting at
the tire-place but were uninjured,
although the rafters were torn in
i small bits above their heads.
; A Few days ago there loft Washington
for South Carolina, five
surveyors from the bureau of
soils in the agricultural departI
ment. This surveying corps will
spend some six or eight months iu
the state foi the purpose of making
a soil survey. One thousand
square miles, taking in a part of
Greenwood, Abbeville, Laurens
and Anderson counties, will be
surveyed and the soil chemically
analyzed. A map will be made
of this section showing the various
kinds of soil to be found within
its limits. When the survey
has been completed the department
will issue a bulletin for distribution
to the farmers of South Caro
una based on tbe soil survey and
setting forth the crept to which
various kinds of soils within the
1,000 square miles are best adapt
ed. Thit bulletin will also contain
expert information as to what
fertilizers are needed to improve
the soil. "These soil surveys have
been made in other sections ot tbe
country and have proved of great
benefit to the farmers. The survey
for South Carolina is being
made at tbe instance of Representatives
Johnson, Latimer and Talbert.
It is hoped that the farmers
will show a lively interest in the
project, as the department will be
urfired to send another nnrrw tn
work elsewhere in the state when
the present survey hus been completed.?Yorkville
