l The State 2iind.
The State Democratic cunven-|
tion was conspicuous yesterday I
for hurmoniousneiis. Kver > thing
passed otl* smoothly and ipiietly,
much wire-pulling was done by;
candidates in and around the con
ivention in a ?piiet way, and those
i issues supposed to be most pro-1
iductivo of discussion created none j
whatever. Senator Tillman introduced
most appropriate resolutions j
as to the memory of the late Gen.
Wade Hampton, and suitable res-!
olalions as to the illness of Chief
Justice Alclver were presented
and adopted.
Absolutely the only subjects!
| brought up in the convention, (
; productive of discussion, were
matters relating to the troubles
of labor and capital, and the convention
expressed itself in no
mild way both in regard to the
Isekout of the operatives of the
cotton mills of the Horse Creek
district, and as to child labor in
cotton mill*.es
over both those matter^, but
those wishing to condemn the mill
managements for the lockout and
those trying to abolish child labor
w< 11 by decisivo votes.

went through without ;i word of

with the suddenness of
a thunderclap from a clear sky.
The only change in the pledge
is that candidates for the I S.
senate and tho I'.S. house of rep

themselves to support the party
plutform.
The two-ling campaign circus
plan was adopted, the executive j
conunitteo being instructed to arr
ange for a double series of camp
ftign meetings in each county.
The convention unanimously 1
and without debate adopted a
simple resolution condemning
Senator McLaurin's course. No
one seemed to take any interest
whatovorin the matter.
After the convention bid adj-j
ourued Senator Tillman was called
for and he responded with a
vigorous speech, in which he dis-j
ployed much of his old time tiro |
and energy, dealing with matter*
of national party policy, and with
the courso of events in congress.
He was most vigorously appended.
AN OBJECT LESSON.
The personnel of the body and
the character of the members
showed plainly that tilings are
running very harmoniously in the
Democratic party in South Caro
liua just now. In this respect
the convention >oster?lay was a
striking object lesson, l'liere t\hn

One of tlu* most striking fen"
Itu es of the convention yesterday
was the fact that practically every
candidate for an important ollice
was a member of the convention.
It was truly a politicul convention,
and the amount of hand-shaking

from $40,000 to $60,000,
struck out tho provision requiring

and left the $60,000 carried

a surprise to the delegation who
