Crazed by his infatuation lor ' Utile Abitha McCullough, a lovely girl of little over 13 years old. , Austin killed the entire family because his advances were refused and his desire to wed the girl was opposed. The tragedy occureed in a lonely farm house at three i o'clock this morning. Austin ] went to the house Friday night ami proposed marriage, lie was rejected and vowing that he would , yet marry her, hurried to the eilv and procured on Saturday a mar- ' riage license. 1 lie went to church on Saturday 1 night and told every one ho met ! that he was to he married that ' night. 1 About 3 o'clock this morning 1 several pistol shots were heard ! but no ono went to investigate until this morning when Wilkinson ' failed to turn up at a neighbors J house where he was engaged in ' harvesting a crop of potatoes. < Kollur, a farm hand was sent to I Wilkinson's house and found the j whole family murdered and Aus- ? tin with a bullet hole in his breast I and the revolver clutched in his ^ hand. News of the disaster spread like wild tire, hut as soon as possible two rescuing parties were started in, one at the main ?ntranee, the other through Thistle mine which adjoins and in which 110 men were at xvorl^ The Thistle party were unable to make any heady way, as t he gas stitllo the workers. The Fraterville party went fullv two miles under the earth, until a heavy fall of slate was encountered. At this barrier men worked like demons, hoping against hope that those beyond might be safe. The scene at the month of the mine while the workers were within were beyond description. Business has suspended in Coal Creek at all its mines us soon as the news of the disss ter became known, and men, wo men and chi'dren gathered around the Fratcrville entrance.
