Van Wyok is to ho congratulated on its good school and we bespeak greater things for it in the near future, j Our peoplo were saddened by j the news of the death of Prof, j Shurley of Pleasant Valley. VVbile ) he was not of our immediate com muiiity, he had taught a number of our boys and girls who were much attached to him, and our people felt a great interest in this good man, and the many good things lie was doing. We feel the great loss of such a man and sympathise with those on whom the blow fulls most heavily and ; hope his mantle may fall on anoth- i er who may fill the places left va- j cant by so useful a man. Some ! time after th eacc'dent soino negro boys passing near by saw his prostrate body down under the mule and ran to where his uncle, Mr. J. S. Stevens, was at work and notified him. When Mr. Stevens arrived upon the scene he found that the lad had been dead for i some time. The President has nominatep Charles E. I Charleston Post \ And it came, to pass that, one 1 John T. Wilcox who on lust VVetlj nesduv night was possessed of a desire to he hutitd alive on the midway, and who had his desire j suti tied, arose from his grave uf- j iim naving speni one nigra under ground. Wilcox nunc forth >es-j tcrday afternoon and today tsj walking the st reets of Char-, leston just like an ordinary citi : /.cn and us none the worse for his j repose in his c?dd grave. The story of ilo- resurrection of j Wilcox \e>tir?i.iy afternoon ex-1 posed ihe orealist fake that has i ever alternated the Charleston j public. The officials of The Kx-! position do not hesitate to say it | was a fraud and they made Wilei x and I'rof. Henderson or Hen-i dtickson, leave the grounds yes j t et day. l'ho fact is Wilcox was never; hypnotized or put to sleep as some people are wont to believe. He j agreed to bo buried alive for the sum of ?1(M) and on Wednesday night ho was laid awar in the grouud in a cheap pine coftin. A wooden shaft about six inches square extending from the head of the collin to about three feet above the surface of the grave to furnish an opening for air. It was through this shaft that visitors to the midway wore allowed to peep at ten cents a peep. It also served as an opening through which the buried man was fed and given drink, lie was fed WedcT nesday night aud yesterday several bottles of heer were lowed to him by means of a string. Occasionally a cigar or a cigarette would be dropped into tho shaft and Wilcox indulged in the pleasure of a smoke when no one was looking. When the rain came yesterday , afternoon water began to rise in the grave. Ills coilin became damp and clammy and there was great danger of the aiun being drowned. Wilcox wondered how much money hud been taken in for ho did not like tLiu idea of being in tho ground unless there was < m good revenue coming in. Ho 1 yelled up tho shaft to tho ticket taker and asked how much money lmd been taken in during tho day. i When the voice came from the grave a woman had just peeped in at the buried man, having just , paid the sum of ten cents for the privilege and the deep, hollow voice of the man frightened her ' and she ran away. "I say,'' i said Wilcox, "what are the re 1 1 < ceipts for the day?" The ticket I taker placed his uiouth at the openiag and yelled hack: "Seventy cents." "Oh, H?11," said \ the buried man, "take me out, i I'm not going to stay in this hole for seventy cents " A fore, ef grave diggers were 1 put to work with shovels and ( spades and soon Wilcox was lifted from his tomb. Pugilism Hppears to havo become tho pastime of the I'nited ? States senators. Tillman and Mc- I ? Laurie's bout in tho senate chain nor started the thing. Then Son- | fttor Money had a scrap with a street car conductor and now Senator MeLaurin and a Soutn Carolina Republican have had a mix-up. j The junior senator's latest ontag- 1 onist is a man of tine pbyeiquelf over six feet tab and well proper- 1 tioned, and that McLaurin got the a best of the encounter is evidence that his former athletic training j ?till stood him in good stoad.? u I'he State.
