The Veterans1 Reunion?Texas a
Wonderful State.
Dear Ledger: Thinking u few
lines from an old friend would lie
appreciated by the good people of
LancuHter county relative to the
Vets reunion und Texas 1 write
the following. As to the Vets
meeting it was a huge ntl'air.
Dallas never again will have such
a crowd. About 30,000 Vets at^
tended. 1 hear that the railroads
sold about 189,000 tickets outside
of Texas. Dallas should receive
from all, especially those who
wore the grey with such credit
as to immortalize themselves totho
world, praise of a true and sincere
nature. Vets were tented on the
beautiful Fair grounds, feasted on
the be t of food, nicely cooked
and served well in the large mess
hall, seating 2,500 at a time. It
was unpleasant in reaching the
doors?whore you would be shot
into the eating room, just like a
chinaberrv from the school bov's
pop guu.
Texas as a state, I must say
candidly in my opinion, is far
ahead of the older states in the
east, especially her prairie l>elt.
To the eye, as you speed along,
lovely scenery greets the same,
furnishing choice food for the
niiud, her beautiful herds of cattle,
roaming on natural grasses,
well wired in, vast fields of oats,
wheat and cotton, the fields too
suffering at present for rain in
some sections, make the eastern
man right much incliued to uovet.
The advantage on the farm is
uiore than any one can picture
from a statement. Young men
are working froinSO to t>."? acres in
a farm, doing the entire plowing;
will of course hire the greater part
?f hoeing. Just think, they make
a cotton bed after the first furrow
with one round, I guess five or
six acres in a day. The cultivator
system is a wonderful thing in
working the crop. One time
through a row cleans the same?
plowing from six to nine acres a
day, according to team, which
consists of two. I find labor on
the farm almost enough. One
hand does about twice the work
in aday, to what they do at home.

bosh. I find plenty oi: .water in
cisterns, wells und tanks. The
greater portion drinks very well.
As to houses I find all of my
South Carolina friends comfortable.
The outlook for bread, hominy
aod wheat are fine. I. \V.
Tillman and J 11. Blake haveheen
kind driving around with us. We
come to many nice towns near
each other on i ail roads. Corsicana,
1 must say, is a beautiful
town; about 15,000 population;
private homes costing $I?0,000;
First Methodist church cost $^0,000.,
oil works an interesting
thing. She sprinkles her street*
with the crude oil on account of
dust. Three miles west of Corsieuna
you lind the state orphanage,
containing three or four hundred
orphans, four large brick build
ings and lovely , grounds. They
have an elegant farm to keep the
little folks employed after school.
Just opposite you find three large
handsome brick houses by the I.
O. O. F. for the old and infirm.
The ubove stands as a monument
to tdeir memory, that while time
rolls on, its grandeur will not fade
and waste, us those we erecr tc
our loved ones, but will shine on
to ages. My advice to the farmers
is to go west, while I dislike to
depopulate my old county, I
> thirk it my duty to advise as I
jl have done. Thanking von for
your space I am your friend.
