Perrv. who is soioiirniiitr for i ^ ' J O a few weeks with relatives in Texas since the reunion of Veter ans adjourned, writes most flatteringly of the Lone Star State. If he can induce Mrs. P., to move out to Texas wo are certain to lose our good townsman by Dec. 1st. The letter was written May 28th at which time the Captain was at the hospitable home of our old friend, Mr. J. H. Blake, who iHo<|ed out to Texas about ten years ago. He had already been to Mr. I. W. Tillman's and was ready to start from Mr. Blake's for Angus, Texas, where lie stated he would "spend a day or so with Bon, and visit .las. Jackson and others from the old State." From Angus he would go direct to Louisiana for a week's stay with relatives. "So far," he states, "1 am much pleased with Texas: find that prosperity and plenty abound. To becaudid, Texas is far ahead of South Carolina. Words fail me to express how much ahead. As to wood, water aud houses that is all bosh. Ike Tillman has wood by the thousands, good water and very fair house?40 acres in corn that will make from .'50 to 70 bushels per acre and a large cotton crop that, if seasons suit, will average him from one-half to one bale per acre. Jim Blake livos in an eight room house with attachments large folding doors, wide passage through the house aud a lovely yard of flowers, in other words, a very attractive home. I tied his house a place for concentration of . . the young folks. They have lots of company and Cousin Belle and her pretty daughter, Florence, entertain i."cely. Tillman and Will Green add to the occasion. Blake has a nice cistern under cover of his house?rain water of course, but better than ours. I would prefer to be a renter hero than own land in S. C., especially if I had to work it. You can say to any one my advice is, Young man go west. You ean't comprehend unless you see the attractions. As far as the o;e can reach lovely views greet the sight and hundreds of acres of Buffalo Clover with its delightful odor groets the sense of smell. Four Hundred and Sixteen Persons Killed and Crops Throughout (hut District Ruined. Calcutta, May 1. ?A tornado has devastated the city of Dacca and adjoining towns. Four hundred and sixteen persons were killed. Crops were ruined throughout the district. There is still great excitt merit at Clomsoii College due to tlwi rebellion of the entire sophomore class and their leaving the college yesterday. The junior and freshmen classes met lust night and resolved to leave the college this morning in a body unless the faculty called for a meeting of the trustees and had the sophomore class, including Cadet Thorn well, rc-instated.. The faculty got wind of what was going on and asked Col. li. W. Simpsonx president of the trustees, to talk with I ho students, lie persuaded the refractory students to defer action until the trustees hold a meeting which is appointed early in .hint. The outbreak, at Clemson is the culmination of trouble which has been brewing the wholo of this session and is due to gravo charges made against certain members of the faculty by nearly all of the student body. A few of the self-expelled Clemson College students were in the city today and from them it was learned that a meeting of the junior class would bo held to-night at the college and the resignation of President Hartzog, Prof. Motu rison, of the depnituicnt of hist >ry and Brackett, of the chemistry department, would ho demanded of the board of trustees. The complaint against the head of the institution and the other professors as well is that of partiality or personal discrimination between the students. Killed In Gravel Pit. Special to The State. Newberry , May 1. ? A negro by the name iof Arthur Fry was killed this afternoon at Mr. Fair's gravel pit, one' mile from the city, by the gravel caving in upon him. Mo died only a few moments after being taken from tho pit. He was about 40 years of age and lived on Mr. Gantt's place, a few miles from town. The verdict ot the coroners jury, which was empanelled immediately, was that ho came to his death from the cause above stated A Pretty Indian Kolic. Special to The Observer. Albemarle, April 28 ?Mr. B. Blalock, who lives seven miles from hero on the Yadkin, plowed up an Indian relic in his Held a few days ago that is a curiosity. It is a figure of u woman delicate ly carved out of flint rock. Every feature is plainly discernablo and the figure is mounted on a stone pedestal which would make it a novel paperweight. Even the face of the woman is colored red. The relic shows that the Indians had sculptors in their tribes long before the foot of white men had trodden in this country. Killed With A Rifle. Special to The Stale. Florence, May I. ? Roll Jack" son, a negro, was accidentally shot by Mr. Andrew Muldrow a prom inent citizen at Muldiow's mill pond, five miles from here, yesterday afternoon.
