Camden yesterday to make that
place their home. Mr. Ed. J.
Mathis went down last Saturday.
As previously announced Mr. Mathis
is opening up a printing establishment

whyse home is near Walkup,
N. C., is at the point of death.
His physiciuns say there is no
hope for his reecovery. Mr. McMurray
lived in Lancaster county
a good many years and his friends
will regret to learn that ho is at
death's door.

For a Free Delivery Route
The citizens of a section of the
county east of Luncaster have |
signed and sent up to Washington
a petition for the establishment of 1
a rural free delivery route from
Lancaster down the Ginger Cike
road to where that road intersects
the Rocky River road; thence down
the latter road to Primus and then
up the Redfield road to Lancaster.
The petition was signed ,by 109
heads of families none of whom
live nearer than a mile of any
postoffice and very few nearer
than three to five miles of any. A
largo section ot county, therefore,
would be greatly benefited by such
u route and there is little dobut
that it will be established. Mr.

The election yesterday to de

of coupon bonds to the amount of
fifteen thousand dollars for school
purposes, viz: the erection of a
suitable school building, resulted i
in favor of the bonds, The vote
was 114 for, and 14 against?a
majority of 110 in fav&r of the
ponds. We feel very much elated 1
over the result. It gives assu- 1
ranee that our town, which has
been steadily growing for the past (
ten years, is to continue ad vane- '
ing.

The post-office and the building 1
next to it occupied by Mr. W. P.
Harris as a store, at Waxhaw, 1
were burned Wednesday night
last about 11 o'clock. Mr. Har- 1
ris lost his entire stock of goods 1

tools. Mr. Fincher, the postmaster,

Wade Hampton Dead
A mfssage was receive! here
yesterday from (Columbia stating
that Gen. Wade Hampton died
about S :d0 o'clock yesterday
morning. Recently ho had a
sever? illness but later rallied. In
the last few days his condition
became worso and night before
last he wns reported in a preen- ,
lious condition. His death wv.s
duo lo a general breakdown from
old age. He celebrated his S4th
birthday last week.
There has been a number of j
heavy frosts during the past week,
which have damaged the fruits
considerably.
Hoke C, Sheerest died at the
Coledonia State farm a few days
ago. Tto Sccrest case is a noted
one and most of our renders are
familiar with it Secrest was charged
with killing his wite and stepdaughter
in Burke county about
55 years ago. He was adjudged
insane after being founn guilty
and spent a number of years in
the insane asylum at Morganton,
but escaped from that institution,
and after being at liberty for a
long while was recaptured, tried
and sentenced to a term of twenty
years iu State prison, and had
served about 8 years of that sen
tence. Secrest was about 50 years

Some persons wish to know
when the big snow of April cainc.
It was Sunday, April 15, lS-fb.
Theie had been tive or six weeks
of spring weather. Forest leaves
were about half grown. Field
crops ami gardens were luxuriant.
Early lots of wheat were beginning
to head. The snow began in
this county 7 to I) o'clock in the
morning and fell six to eight hours.
The general estimate was that :t
was a 0 inch snow. Next morning
there was a haul freeze. All vegetutiou
was killed. The dead peaches
made the ground beneath tlie trees
black when they fell. It remained
cold several days after the snow.
That was before the days ?f weather
bureaus and recoril of temperature.

State Fair to be Open to Bidders.

State. Charleston, Apiil 10.?
Charleston and other cities will
have an opportunity to bid for
the State fair this year. Fer
nearly half a century these fairs
have been held in Columbia annually
with few exceptions, prin
cipally during the civil war. It
is claimed that Columbia does
not offer the fair a sufficient
amount of financial support and
for that reason the committee at
a meeting held here yesterday,
has called for bids from other
cities.
