I he Stale railroad 'lomuii-sinn htm received a letter from Chief Engineei A. P. Lm ing f the Boston elevated Railway company, hi which ho tells the commission of a nen railroad line capitalists there are 1 prop ?sing to build from S uth port, N. C., to Knoxville. Tenn.. the line lying principally across the upper portion of ihis State. The proposed line is already on paper ready t<? ho presented t?? the capitalists interested. Th?v j wish to cut through and open up :new territory, aud run from tlo Jcoal fields, suppl\ingcoul through intersecting main lines to the cotton m<lls of the Piedmont and giving un excellent new port, as well as feeding the port of Char lestou through the Coa-t Line, the Southern, the O. R ami C., and the Seaboard The engineer writes that th?*\ expect the line to he of great benefit to all South Carolina porta sndtctfrtiR and. ndiTei >4Th? pro posed line is about 400 miles in length; it might pay as an east and west lino through a productive country, but would depend on connections north and smith. 1 have not failed to notico that the railroads in your State appear to be paying." Engineers aro now at Suuthport looking about. A glance at the map shows that such a line would give railroad facilities to a portion of South Carolina no?v almost without service, save north and south, and the short cast and west line from Lancaster to Chester. All the upper tier of counties would be touched from Horry on the west to Oconee on the east, and the line would likely get through the gap in the mountains which the Blue Rioge road was designed to use. The distance to the Tennessee coal fields would he materially shortened.
