from the debate in oonure>s
on Wednesday. It ia> an ad mis- ,
sion, inveluntary 110 doubt, of the J
, Republican party's former nttitude
toward Cuba and an intima- J
tion of what its future position j
' may be. That th^ Democrats
forced the Repuolican administea^
tion and congress into the declarn
tion of war against Spain is a fact
which, since the successful termi\
,
nation of the war, the Republicans
hare endeavored to deny;
indeed they have claimed all the
honor and all the glory of beginning,
of prosecuting and of ondi
ng the war. But Mr. Hepburn
in the heat of debate told the
tru h. The Democrats forced the
Republicans to the issue and
forced thein to declare for the independence
of Cuba. The Republican
party did so Vyigainst its
will," and for some time lias bsen
trying to undo what it did then.
Mr Hepburn admits that his
pirty would now gladly repiuli
ite openly the* declarations the
effect of which it ha* secretly
been trying to defeat ?The State.
