New Yerk. The work of
placeing the paintings in the
art palace wae immediately begun.
The drawings and paintings helong
to private collections in New
York city and were selected by
Mr. J. B. Townsend, director of
art of the exposition, especially
fer exhibition purposes. They

The paintings are works of art,
some ef thean being creations of
famous masters and hare attracted
the critics and levers of fine arts
at more than one exposition.
Many of them, however, hare
never been on public exhibition
befor and this is the first time
they have been allowed to leave
the drawing rooms and parlors of
the owners.
Forty cases of exhibits arrived
here this morning. infermati n
was received here today that a
number ef the famous horses of
William C. Whitney will be entered
for the races during the exposition.
The races will be held
every afternoon, at least five
events taking place daily.

in the 30th Infantry. When h!s
regiment came home he was again
{ mustered out of service. Having
a fondness for the military, how|
ever, he sought a commission in
i the regular army and was given
the place of second lieutenant in
Eleventh Cavalry, but he has since
been made quarter master, with
the rank of captain.
