Last night abount 11 o'clock,
according te the testimony of

there was a knock at the door. "I
want to the door," said he. ''and
whh confionted by these mes, one
of whom wa# armed with a doublebarreled
shotrgun, and one with a
revolver. They asked mo who
lived here. 1 replied that myself
and another gentleman. I then
asked him who he was and what
his business was. He replied
that he was a constable armed
with a search warrant and w is
looking for a colored man supposed
to live in the louse. 1 replied
that there were no colored
men in this house. I asked him
to show me the warraut and they
refused Hearing the noise, Mr.
S* aver came t > the front door.
Then the men began calling us
'scabs' and other names, and ordered
us to come out of the house,
threatening to blow our brains out
if we did not comply. Instantly
a white man sprang over the railing
with a revolver pointed at Mr.
Seaver. At the same time the
man with the double-barreled shot
gun discharged the same full in
my face. 1 then turned and as
the crowd backed away to sur
round the house I started for the
middle room and passed on to the
kitchen te secure a hand axe. As
I reached the kitchen door opening
on the rear porch, I heard
shots in the frent room and heard
the fall of a body accompanied by
heavy groans, mingled with
curses.
"Just as I was about to step te
the kitchen deor to pick up the
hatchet, I was shot in two places
?left knee and left wrist?and
fell. I then heard more curses in
the front room accompanying a
shot. Then I heard the footsteps
of parties approaching toward me.
Arriving at my prostrate ferm
they began cursing me.
"I endeavored to rise and was
immediately kicked ia the head
and back with cries of 'finish the
damned scab, we have fixed the
other; we will now finish him."
1 Others interposing, they desisted

The a'tove testimony was taken
by Coroner Green before the
wounded man was remrred to the
hospital. Although the homicide
occurred about midnight, it was
nearly 2 o'clock before the police
could be notified, as the negoes in
the neighborhood were terrified.

Jackson's Birthplace.*
Of all stiff-necked, wrong-'
headed people in this world a
North Carolinian is the worst, i
No use to argue with one?no use1
to point our facts to bitn, to ahow
him the error of hi? way; if be
once gets it into his head that a
thing is so, for him it is so whether '
it is so er not. This in reference
to the following from The Wax- j
haw Enterprise:
The fact that Andrew Jackson'
was born right near this place, or
in other words in Jackson tewnship,
Unioa county, North Carolina,
is so firmly established and
fixed in the minds ot our people
that they are always surprised to
find such men as the editor of the
(^hn.rl*>Mtnn \nw? anil Pnin i?r
either so ignorant of the facts in
the case or so prejudiced as to he
contending to the contrary. 1
That is what North CaroI
lisians have been saying for the
last half hundred years, until at
last they have come to believe it.
But let's aee what .Jackson says.
In a letter to a citizen, a relative
I believe, in this town in Nullification
days he speaks of this as
his native State, and expresses his
regret at having to send treops
against his own people?as it wan
beginning to loek as if he would
have te do. Then in the clause in
his will disposing of the silver
vase presented to him by the
ladies of Charleston, which is to
go to the last survivor of the
Palmetto Regiment in the Mexican
War, he again speaks of South
Carolina as "my native State."
That ought to settle it, but it
doesn't, for there are not wanting
historians te hack up the contentions
North Carolina editors in
their claim. Rut Jackson was
there; vhe North Carolina editors
were not?Beit her were the historians.

Two Asylum Noises Charged
With Murder.
ChicMgo, Nov. 3.?Two female
nurses at the asylum for the insane
at Dunning, ill., will tomorrow
he formally charged by
Secretary Follett W. Bull of the
Civil Service Reform association
of having caused the death of two
patients in the asylum, Kate Ned- ;
do and Kate Kurkowski.
The charge will he made that the
nurses deliberately withheld food
from the patients, sometimes giv~'
ing them nothing at aii and for
weeks nothing hut breakfast and
tea. It will also he charged that
medicines provid <1 for the patients
were not administered to them. '
The motive to he assigned in the
charges is that the patients were'
especially obnoxious to the nurses
and that their course was promot- !
ed by a desire so to weaken the
patients that they would become
ill and he sent to a ward for the
sick, thus relieving the nurses of
the care of them.
