The Vorkville Enquirer learns!
of some interesting stories thitare
being told of the big pic-nic oc I
rasion at Liberty Hill on the 23d
lilt , especially iu so far as it relates
to Senator Tillman.
The senator, so the story goes,
ha I l?e?*n specially invited ; hut
he declined to accept the invitation
except on a promise of the
oemmitUe thai his "expenses" to
the amount of $10. tie paid.
The senator mad* a character,

way not exactly national issues,

majority, and he took occasion also
to addross himwlf to the do.

In the course of his talk the senator

'iu- l i i i -
i n? speucu iqi'ougoi'iir was listened
to with more or less attention
; but was not applauded with
esjiecial enthusiasm. Asa matter <
of fact, it is said that the Liberty !
Hill people have not been an espe- |
chilly demonstrative community |
since the tirst few years of the
early nineties.
Hie $10 for Senator Tillman's
expenses hart not been raised be- j
forehand as would have been the ,
< a-e had the couimittee been more |
thoughtful and considerate, so it j
whs necessary to raise the amount
by subscription after the speech
had been delivered and the work
whs rather slow. But whether,
as the result of the publicity or
otherwise, Senator Tillman became
quite generous with the
money when it was turned over
to him. He donated it to the
rifle company with instructions
that it be used for providing better
seats around the speakers'
stand for use next year.
There has been a great deal of
talk about the meeting all down
in Lancaster count , and it seems
to be quite a pity that there was
no newspaper man present to
write up the whole story in detail

Dr. Horn beck Dead ? His Body
to be Cremated.
Charleston, S. C., Aug. 2.?'
Dr. Henry B Hornheck, at the
time of his death, and for many
years health officer of this port,
died here yesterday. He was a
Confederate surgeon of ability,
and ex-president of the American
Medical Association and an
eminent authority on yellow fever.
His body, according to his
direction, will be ciemated, the
third instance of the kiud in the
history of South Carolina, the
first, having been Henry Laurens,
the president of the Continental
Congress, who died in 1792, the
first cremation in this country.
The attitude of Tillman and the
Tiilmanites in South Carolina toward
Senator McLaurin has t?egotten
for thera a good deal of
embarrassment. The Washington
Post, lor instance, makes this unpleasant
observation : ?'According
to the action of the South Carolina
Democratic State committee,
it is all right for Democratic United
States Senators to turn Populists,
but all wrong for thera to
turn Republicans." And The
Spartanburg Herald, with the apparent
purpose of making itself
disagreeable, asks, "Why are the
Haskellites, who acted outside of
the Democratic party, considered
irnnri D#?mn??rnt* nhilfl Unl .anrin
who is merely charged with hold
ing Republican views, is asked to
rawign i" And hefere this question
can be answered, asks why it
is that McLaurin should lie regarded
as a Republican and asked
to resign while Congressman El.
hott "was never asked to resign
for opposing the free coinage of
silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 when
it was the leading Democratic is*
sue." The Post and The Herald
appear to have the brethren on

Unexpected Result

Corpse of Negro Boy, Who Was

End of Search for Bodv.
The State, Aug. 4th.
Edward Allston, a negro hoy

to hurl into the pool several
charges of dynamite This was
done with sickening results, the
corpse being severed at the waist
as cleanly as if cut hv u buzz saw.
Acting Coroner McMuster hold
the inquest over the head and
shoulders of the dead hoy and a
verdict of death from accidental
drowning was returned bv tho
jury.
The only eye witness present
at the inquest was Engineer John
Hunter, who saw the boy as he
sank.
A crowd was soon at the scene
and many volunteers, white and
colored, began the search for the
body. For over an hour the men
dived in vain and one of the spectators
who laid claim to a knowledge
ef the effect of dynamite insisted
on burling in three cburges.
This, he said, would bring the
! body to the surface tborougly in;
tact.
| Three timea the water shot up
in a geyser like column, hut no
sign of the body was forthcoming.
I Curtis Heffner, a boy not over
14, then started in to assist his
older brother who had been working
faithfully for s >me time
locate the corpse. The first time
he dived into the 25-toot hole and
on coming up he gasped, "I
'caught bis arm." Mr. Fred
Heffner then went under and came
up shortly holding the dead boy
by the arm.
lbe spectacle was a horrible
one when the rescuer came ashore
carrying the upper half of the
body and placed it on the ground
bleeding aud mutilated.
Some negroes were hired to bring
the rest of the corpse ashore
and the couaty utteaded to the
burial, as the parents of the boy
are dead.
