' The first lynching in the history of DeKalb county eras recorded j today, when Charley Davis, the ; man who was charged with assault; ing Miss Kate Hughes last Sunday evening was taken from the : court house by a mob of 25 people and hanged about a quarter of a mile from town. Davis' trial was being held today. When the | witness began to give bis testimony the friends and relatives of the girl arose and made for the prisoner. For a time there were , wild scenes and the people were ! much excited. The sheriff, ene of bis deputies and a constable who were trying to prevent the lynching, together with the father , of the defendant, were severely injured in a clash with the mob. Of negro males over SI, 63,358 are literate, and 76,764 illiterate, which is to any that more than half of the negro voters are illiterate !
