Western Corn Badly Injnred.

Florida Cotton in Below the
Average.
Washington. July 16.?The
weather bureau's weekly summary
of crop conditions says:
1 The States of the middle Itocky
I mountain region and Missouri and
I Mississippi valleys have experi
! enced another, the t hird consecutive
week of intense heat. With
an almost entire absence of rain
the crops in the region named
hare heen subject to most unfavorable
conditions.
The corn crop as a whole in the
great corn States of the central
valle\ s has materially deteriorated,
and lias sustained serious injury
over the western portion of the
corn l>. It, especially in Missouri,
Kansas and Oklahoma. A very
large part of the crop is late,
however, and this has witksteod
the trying conditions of the
drought and heat remarkably well,
and with early rains will still
make a fair crop. This is particu
larly applicable to Iowa. Nebraska
and portions or Kansas
and northern Missouri. The early
corn in central and southern Mis
souri, portions ot eastern Arkansas,
Kansas and in the central and
west Gulf States has heen irreparably
injured. In the upper Ohio
vnllitv corn uihilu >"

has improved und in the Atlantic
coast districts the crop has made
excellent progress.
Except in the Carolina* and
Florida, cotton is generally well
colli rated and over the greater
part of the central and western
districts is standing the drought
well, although growth has been
checked and fruiting at the top
i? commonly reported. Cotton
has suffered from heavy rains in
North Carolina where it is making
too much stalk. In Georgia the
prospect is much below the avei age
and many tielda have been
abandoned. In southwest Texas
J early cotton is opening and some
picking has been done.
IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Cotton improved under culti
vation, and, although still very
small, looks healthy und is fruiting
better than last week. Most
of the Holds have boon cleaned of
grass, and the plants are growing
slowly. In places cotton continues
to have a ytllow color, and there
ara reports of shedding loaves and
squares, ho a island is thriving,
